Bring Your Destiny to Life with Tarot (and Astrology!)

A look at tarot, astrology and visualization. Pull the card that relates to your astrology chart. This was originally published as a guest post on a fellow astrologer’s website. Her site is shutting down, and I've republished my articles here.

 ***

In a natal astrology, the placement of the Moon’s Nodes tells us where our greatest discomfort lies but also where we can find joy and miracles if we ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. My first astrology professor, Demian Allan, used to tell us that when clients asked about their destiny, he looked for their North Node.

The Moon’s Nodes are viewed within the polarity of the South Node, which speaks to behavioral patterns that once gave results, but now push us into a comfort zone that handicaps progress. The North Node falls in the opposite sign, encouraging us to do what feels scary or awkward in order to continue growing.

Bringing Your Destiny to Life

Jan Spiller published a fantastic book called Astrology for the Soul with coping strategies and paradigm shifts for each of the Signs. For example, a person born with their North Node in Aries and their South Node in Libra could focus on developing the positive traits associated with Aries such as leadership and self-sufficiency. They could  leave behind the limiting traits of Libra, such as excessive consensus building, putting others first, or indecision.

The energy of the Zodiac signs can be brought to life visually if we look at each of these within the framework of the four suits in a Tarot deck, which coincidentally, were designed to represent the opportunities and challenges faced by each of the Elements. So for example, the journey of the hero through the watery Suit of Cups represents the emotional intimacy and homemaking that is valued by Cancer, the fear of betrayal but also the deep love of soul mates experienced by Scorpio, and Pisces’ desire to go beyond an imperfect reality to a dream life.

How To Approach Tarot Cards

While tarot has been used as a divination tool, the images themselves and the stories told are based on Jungian archetypes that speak to our subconscious in such a way that when reading for oneself, we see what our intuition and subconscious have to say. Our thoughts and feelings provide the messages, and combined with a bit of storytelling, we discover the in’s and out’s of our life path.

Below you’ll find descriptions based on my intuitive understanding of tarot. The relationship between individual cards and Signs is based on work done by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the late 19th century.

North Node in Fire

This placement relates to the Suit of Wands and an individual’s ability to navigate the world with courage, leadership and passion. If we lay the cards out from the Ace to the 10 of Wands, we follow a story arc that begins with a moment of inspiration and how that idea then develops into a plan of action. We also see the hero of that journey struggle with their self-confidence, with the ability to inspire others to follow them, and with the delicate balance between trusting their own skills and intuition, and the burnout that comes from trying to go it alone.

The Ace of Wands relates to the inspiration, drive and passion common to Fire, while the energy of individual Signs can be associated with the following cards:

  •   Aries:               2-3-4 of Wands
  •   Leo:                 5-6-7 of Wands
  •   Sagittarius:     8-9-10 of Wands

North Node in Earth

This placement relates to the Suit of Pentacles and an individual’s journey through the realm of material success, stability and philanthropy. If we lay out the cards from the Ace to the 10 of Pentacles, we see the challenges associated with embarking on new financial ventures. Having made it through a few rocky patches, we find our footing and can easily satisfy our financial needs, freeing up time and energy to help others.

The Ace of Pentacles relates to the practicality and secure foundations of Earth, while the energy of individual Signs can be associated with the following cards:

  • Capricorn:      2-3-4 of Pentacles
  • Taurus:            5-6-7 of Pentacles
  • Virgo:              8-9-10 of Pentacles

North Node in Water

This placement relates to the Suit of Cups and an individual’s journey through the world of home life, intimate relationships and intuition. If we lay out the cards from the Ace to the 10 of Cups, we see the evolution of a person or a relationship’s emotional development from the early stages of courtship, but also how we deal with emotional upset, including times when we’re intuitively aware that a situation, a relationship or an arrangement no longer supports our growth. The watery world of intuition often pushes us to bring about necessary changes.

The Ace of Cups represents the emotional and intuitive nature of Water, while the energy of the individual Signs can be associated with the following cards:

  •        Cancer:           2-3-4 of Cups
  •        Scorpio:          5-6-7 of Cups
  •        Pisces:            8-9-10 of Cups

North Node in Air

This placement relates to the Suit of Swords and an individual’s journey through the world of logic, thought,  communication and social harmony. If we lay out the cards from the Ace to the 10 of Swords, we see the challenges of developing a clear, logical and harmonious mind that is both forward thinking and versatile, without falling into the trap of having too much mental energy (Gemini) and burning out.

The Ace of Swords relates to the mental acuity that is common to Air signs, while the energy of the individual Signs can be associated with the following cards:

  •        Libra:              2-3-4 of Swords
  •        Aquarius:       5-6-7 of Swords
  •        Gemini:          8-9-10 of Swords

Adding The Final Touch...

We can connect with the specific cards associated with our North Node’s Sign or Element by meditating on the visuals, by reading up on different interpretations, or by writing about how the images make us feel. And playing to the opposite side of the coin, we could do the same with the opposite sign’s cards (the South Node).

By combining creative techniques with the rational side of Astrology, we assimilate the message of the Moon’s Nodes consciously (rational mind) and unconsciously (intuitive mind), so that behavioral changes come about quicker.

Note: The following pairs of Signs are opposites: Aries & Libra, Taurus & Scorpio, Gemini & Sagittarius, Cancer & Capricorn, Leo & Aquarius, Virgo & Pisces."

Retrogrades: A Do-It-Yourself Astrological Pharmacy

I believe retrogrades affect us if we haven't worked through our issues. Those are often reflected in the natal chart. Details below! This was originally published as a guest post on a friend's website. Her blog is shutting down, and I've republished my articles here.

***

We have all heard phrases like Aries energy is full of spirit but sometimes impatient, or Capricorn is reliable but overly concerned with material gain. Each of the Zodiac signs has a spectrum of traits that range from highly functional benefits to quirks that can easily become stumbling blocks (or let’s face it, pitfalls). While we should never stereotype, this is what it means to be human and developing self-awareness makes a huge difference. From this perspective, an astrology chart is a treasure of a roadmap. It tells us so much about ourselves.

Astrology spells out the limiting behaviors that are common in each sign. By combining this with behavioral psychology, we can retrain our instincts so they are no longer based on fear or false beliefs. For example, an Aries female can stop herself if her impatience starts to get the better of her. Or a Virgo man can see his attention to detail devolving into obsessive or compulsive behavior. Rather than say “I was built this” way, we make an effort and change.

What Happens In Crisis Situations?

What happens to our self-awareness during crisis situations? In one of his book launches, the late Wayne Dyer stood on stage with a half-cut orange and squeezed it until the juice dripped out, telling us that when people are under pressure, that’s when we see what is inside them. We show our true colors. The natal chart, especially our Sun and Moon signs, often influence the way each of us reacts in crisis situations as they rule our spirit and emotional security.

Astrological transits can tell us when these high-stress periods will come along. So for example, if we look at Pluto and Saturn in in Capricorn, people with personal planets in Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) will feel the crunch. We can use this knowledge in two ways: first, to get ahead of ourselves by using the theoretical understanding of astrology to make changes in relevant life areas. What houses and planets that will find themselves under pressure with the transit? Is there anything that you have been avoiding?

The second approach to transits involves vibrational healing – using tools like homeopathy, crystals, essential oils and flower remedies to keep stress in check so that we act out less.

The Benefits of Vibrational Healing

We are all made of energy, our thoughts, our emotions and even our metabolic processes. The physical body is surrounded by a light body known as the Aura; it acts as a filter for all of the vibes we send out into the world and those we receive. For simplicity’s sake, we can visualize the Aura as made up of four layers: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. The Spiritual layer includes an energetic imprint of our natal astrology chart, which as we know, tells us what signs the planets were in when we were born. This filter is one of the reasons why we feel astrological transits so keenly and why we resonate with certain signs and not others. Even if we can’t spell it out, our energy body knows when we are in friendly territory.

Vibrational healing operates on the assumption that every imbalance has an energetic imprint and that we can restore balance to the mind, body and emotions with an essence that matches the imbalance. So for example, an Aries man who feels overtaken by impatience during a crisis situation could reach for the Bach Flower Remedy aptly named Impatiens, or for a Red Jasper crystal, both of which will help him calm down and focus. The same concept would apply regardless, if his natal Sun, Moon, Ascendant or another major planet is in Aries.

"Do It Yourself" Remedies

There are crystals, essential oils and flower remedies for each Zodiac sign. We can use this to create grounding and centering survival kits based on our natal astrology charts. Based on my personal experience with energy healing and astrology, what works best is a survival kit with the vibration of your personal planets so that your bases are all covered, no matter what.

  • Option 1: Carry a pouch full of pebble-sized crystals with you to strengthen your Aura.
  • Option 2: Create your own Aura spray with the relevant Bach Flower Remedies.

Below you will find the vibrational correspondences for each of the Zodiac signs. We can only work with 5-6 elements at a time to avoid diluting the effect. I would suggest beginning with the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Rising Sign. If your ruling planet is not mentioned here, I would consider swapping it in – and we can use our pendulum to choose the right mix.

The following crystals and remedies are vibrational matches for the Zodiac:

Aries Crystals: Bloodstone, Red Jasper. Gentian Bach Flowers
Taurus Crystals: Rose Quartz, Lapis Lazuli. Oak Bach Flowers.
Gemini Crystals: Citrine, Agate Moss. Walnut Bach Flowers.
Cancer Crystals: Moon Stone, Smoky Quartz.  Larch Bach Flowers
Leo Crystals: Tigers Eye, Sunstone, Clear Quartz. Vine Bach Flowers
Virgo Crystals: Chrysocolla, Fluorite. Crab Apple Bach Flowers
Libra Crystals: Aventurine, Malachite. Centaury Bach Flowers
Scorpio Crystals: Garnet, Blue Beryl, Labradorite. Chicory Bach Flowers.
Sagittarius Crystals: Sodalite, Pietersite, Red Jasper. Wild Oat Bach Flowers.
Capricorn Crystals: Black Tourmaline, Jet, Obsidian. Rock Water Bach Flowers.
Aquarius Crystals: Aquamarine, Amethyst. Elm and Water Violet Bach Flowers,
Pisces Crystals: Sodalite, Rhodochrosite. Clematis Bach Flowers.

In order to create an Aura spray, we can place a few drops of each remedy in a bottle, fill it with running water and spray it in our Aura morning and night. The exact quantities can be found on the Bach Centre website. There are a number of correspondences available and the most famous is based on a book called the 12 Healers of the Zodiac. The correspondences mentioned here are based on my own energy healing work:
Flowers for Every Star Sign (link)

The crystal pouch is easier to assemble so long as we remember to cleanse and program new crystals so that they are dedicated to balancing our energy. Please follow the link to my Chakra Healing & Magick book for more on crystal remedies and energy healing.

Chakras, Energy Healing & Planetary Magic

“One of the more exciting things about energy healing is the opportunity that it gives us to channel a variety of energies from Mother Earth and the Universe. We can learn to use energy meditations to connect with the Zodiac, bringing certain qualities into our personality or our environment. For example, if we want to bring love, friendship or tact into our lives, we would channel the energy of Libra, or the planet Venus. Gemini and its ruling planet, Mercury, help with negotiation skills and mental agility. Each of the 12 Zodiac signs and their ruling planets has specific spheres of influence.

Energy Healing itself is simple, but because the planets are so powerful, it is best to begin by preparing our physical and emotional bodies to receive all of this energy!

Step 1: Take Care Of Yourself

Think about how you felt after the last Full Moon. Some of us feel tired while others are full of energy. This is because the Moon's gravitational pull on the Earth is strong. It influences our energy levels, emotions and even our sleep patterns. If we are not well rested, well fed and in reasonably good shape, the same energetic overload is likely to happen when we channel Venus, Mars or Jupiter, or work with the Zodiac for healing. Simple suggestions include catching a full night's sleep, eating well and drinking plenty of water, as intuitive energy is said to travel through the body's water reserves.

Step 2: Lay The Foundations With Chakra Healing

Most of us have heard of the Chakra System - those wheels of light that are situated along the spine of the human body. There are seven main Chakras in the body, beginning with the Root Chakra at the base of the spine, and working our way up to the Crown Chakra at the top of the head. Each of the seven main Chakras is said to influence a different sphere of our lives, ranging from economic stability, our appetite for life and personal power, even our communication and critical thinking skills, as well as a host of intuitive abilities.

When it comes to astrology and planets, the most relevant Chakras are actually located outside the human body in the Aura (details below!), but we need to strengthen the primary seven before venturing out. A simple chakra healing meditation is all we need to get started. My personal favorite is Elliot Jay Tanzer’s guided meditation for grounding, clearing and centering our energy {Amazon}. In an ideal scenario, we would prepare by following a chakra meditation daily for one month, and weekly thereafter.

We also have smaller chakras on the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet, which are often used in healing, or to enhance crystals with planetary vibrations.

Step 3: Activate Your Earth Star

In addition to the seven main chakras that sit along the central column or spine, we also have several outer chakras. Two of these are especially important when it comes to working with the planets and the Zodiac for self-healing. The first is known as the Earth Star Chakra, and it is located about 6 inches below our feet. It gives us stronger foundations by connecting us with Mother Nature, which is essential if we want to channel the planets in our solar system without toppling over, energetically speaking. Activating this Chakra also makes it easier for us to feel the energy in crystals, which will come in handy when we begin to work with planetary healing & crystal magic.

Activating the Earth Star Chakra is easy!
All we need to do is walk in the park, ideally with lots of trees, and visualize a star shining brightly beneath our feet. We can also visualize this star in our Chakra Meditations.

Step 4: Awareness of the Soul Chakra

The Soular (Soul Star) Chakra is located six inches above the head. It provides a direct link to the planets in our Solar System, as well as to any issues that we may have carried forward from past lives.

When it comes to channeling energy from planets or the Zodiac and integrating it into our lives, those energy healing sessions will be much more effective if the Soul Star Chakra is shining brightly. That said, it is best to let this powerful energy center awaken on its own, so as not to destabilize our energy field.

The following visualization will gradually awaken all of your Chakras:

  • Ground Yourself. Visualize massive roots growing out of the bottoms of your feet into the ground. See and feel them traveling through  miles dirt, rocks and lava, until they reach a cluster of quartz crystals.
  • Bring that Crystalline Energy Up through your roots, to your physical body. That energy enters your body through the chakra in your feet, flows up your legs, through your heart and to the crown of your head.
  • Heart Awareness: Bring your attention to your Heart Chakra and visualize it full of pink, white or green light. That light travels down your body, through your roots into the ground, and back up to your Crown.
  • Reach for the Stars. That light from your Heart Chakra continues to travel upwards in a direct line over your head. Take your attention up through the sky and Universe to a distant source of light, your North Star.
  • Close down: Visualize yourself connected above and below for 3-5 minutes before disengaging from the star above. One last ray light runs through your body into the ground. Shield yourself with navy blue light.

This  meditation activates the energy body gradually. The next step is to connect with the planets as they transit their rulerships in the Zodiac (or the Moon, in any sign) to download that energy. With this in mind, let's get started! We have three months to flex our Chakras before the next entry on healing with planets.”

>> That was one of the guest posts that I published on my friend’s website. These cosmic chakras are NOT covered in my energy healing books, which instead, lay the foundations with the seven main chakras (root to crown). We studied this expanded chakra system in my energy healing accreditation, at the School of Intuition & Healing in London.

Healing the Shadow with Crystal Therapy

What if your light was in your shadow? Astrology paves the way. This was thr first in a series of guest posts on a fellow astrologer’s website. Her blog is shutting down, and I've republished most of my astrology content here on my blog.

***

"The way we approach anything in life is often shaped by our background, and as an energy healer, it is not surprising that natal astrology has provided not only a tool for understanding myself and how I interact with the world around me, but also a roadmap for self-healing. Studying our natal charts reveals many secrets, one of which brings the realization that:

My Shadow Is Someone Else's Light.

We all have feelings, desires, and qualities within ourselves that we hide from others, and often, hide them so deeply that we may not be aware of those qualities within ourselves. Eventually, we meet someone who displays those qualities openly - perhaps ambition or frivolity - and  it rubs us the wrong way. What we dislike in others is often a reflection of the qualities within ourselves that we have yet to acknowledge. Along the same lines, what we admire in others can also be an expression of the capabilities that we have yet to develop . . .

In healing circles, this is known as our Shadow, and in astrology, those aspects can be explored, healed and integrated by working with the signs that sit opposite each other on the Zodiac. If we think of the Zodiac as six coins with two faces each, a person born under the sign of Libra will have as his opposite Aries. Within themselves, they have Libra's social skills, diplomacy, and fairness, but also the potential for Aries' confidence and the Ram's desire to be first. How comfortable they are with that Fire influences how they react to those qualities in others. Most of us identify with one side of the coin more than the other - feeling uncomfortable with those aspects when we see them in others, etc.

That dislike can send us running for the hills, but ironically, the more time we spend with that energy, the more comfortable we will feel with it. Eventually, we may even embrace it within ourselves, using those characteristics to our advantage. All of the Zodiac signs have strengths and weaknesses and to draw on our Shadow's strengths, we have to become comfortable enough to embrace all of it.

In this example, the healing comes about when the Libra person can connect with both sides of the coin, interacting with others in a friendly, cooperative manner, while also displaying the Aries qualities of leadership, action and a healthy level of selfishness – standing their ground when necessary. There are several healing methods that can bring about this appreciation for the Shadow.
The signs that sit opposite each other on the Zodiac Wheel are Aries & Libra, Taurus & Scorpio, Gemini & Sagittarius, Cancer & Capricorn, Leo & Aquarius, Virgo & Pisces. The first place to look would be our Sun Sign and its opposite, although the Moon and its Nodes are also essential.

How Do We Bring About This Healing???

A simple way for us to access both our Light and Shadow sides – without overloading ourselves – would be to work with crystals and with flower essences. We could begin by choosing the essences that correspond with the Zodiac sign that we want to connect with. So for example, if we feel uncomfortable with the energy of a particular sign, we can add a few drops of that sign’s Bach Flower Essence to our drinking water. The relationship between Bach Flower Essences and Zodiac signs was laid out in Peter Damian’s book, The 12 Healers of the Zodiac. Another option would be to choose crystals whose energy corresponds to the sign in question, and carry it with us for a month so that we begin to assimilate its energy. Soon enough, we begin to feel comfortable with that energy within ourselves, while embracing (or at least accepting) it in others.

Here is a list of crystal correspondences, by no means exhaustive:

  •  Aries:          Bloodstone, Red Jasper.
  • Taurus:       Rose Quartz, Lapis Lazuli.
  • Gemini:      Citrine, Agate Moss.
  • Cancer:      Moon Stone, Smoky Quartz
  • Leo:          Tigers Eye, Sunstone, Clear Quartz.
  • Virgo:          Chrysocolla, Fluorite.
  • Libra:          Aventurine, Malachite.
  • Scorpio:      Garnet, Blue Beryl, Labradorite.
  • Sagittarius:        Sodalite, Pietersite, Red Jasper.
  • Capricorn:    Black Tourmaline, Jet, Obsidian.
  • Aquarius:    Aquamarine, Amethyst.
  • Pisces:         Sodalite, Rhodochrosite.

Crystals need to be cleared and charged before we use them to be sure  we are not carrying the energy of the previous owner. This can be done  by leaving them on a bed of rock salt for 1-2 hours, and then holding them in our dominant hand, stating the intent. Ask that the crystal work for your highest good! Thank the crystal and clear it when you no longer need that energy. If the crystals mentioned above are difficult to acquire, we can also work with clear quartz, programming the crystal when the Moon is in the Sign that we want to connect with (a bit of moon magick!).

By integrating the Shadow we can access talents that were just beyond our reach, before moving onto other aspects of the natal chart that can also be balanced and healed with crystal healing."
