An Affirmation To Unblock Your Spiritual Vision

Gabrielle Bernstein has an awesome affirmation that goes something like this: Let me see this (person or thing) for the first time. Technically it's from A Course in Miracles, because that's where Gabby got her start, but I stumbled across it while reading her new book: The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Fear to Faith.

The message behind this affirmation is that when we see something or someone, we don't see them as they are, instead looking at them through the filter of our past, opening the door to prejudice, misunderstandings and even blindness.

Why Would One See The Past?

So for example, if we went for lunch and were introduced to an athlete, instead of viewing that new acquaintance as someone in their own right, we may project the feelings that we had about the jocks at school onto to them, despite the fact that it has been 20 years. If I had a bad experience, I may not respond so nicely. If I was part of the team, that perceived connection may lead me to be warmer, etc.

In either case, we respond to a new person based on the past, and not on what is happening in that moment. It's one of many filters that color the way we view the world and how we interact with others. It is a big stumbling block to overcome!

It Also Blocks Our Learning...

As I am sure you have noticed - I love reading books, attending classes and learning new things. One of the biggest blocks to learning something new is actually thinking that you already know the answer - or an answer. That is why, when I attended my first Reiki class in 2013, I made a conscious decision to check everything I thought I knew about energy healing at the door. This made it possible for me to open up...

I try to do this in every class that I attend, telling myself that there are many ways of working,  practicing healing or accessing our intuition. But sometimes our blindness gets the best of us and we see things the old way. All this year I have been struggling to wrap my head around a concept that we learned in my Practical Kabbalah Class, and today it finally dawned on me that I was viewing the material through the lens of the books that I have read, and missing the mark completely.

Ask To See The Big Picture

This Practical Kabbalah class is unrelated to the Kabbalah Centre of red string fame, where I also studied. Developed by Dr Joseph Michael Levry, we use numerology, the Tree of Life and astrology to map out the planets that are most influential in our soul's path. Our main planets are represented on a symbol with five points for Spirit, Air, Earth, Fire and Water. In the books I had read before, whenever someone drew this symbol it was  to infuse an object or a space with one of these four elements (or to remove it). Here, we draw the symbol to activate our personal planets.

It may seem silly, but I couldn't understand why we were told to draw this symbol in one direction and not another. This question has been on my mind since November, and our teacher, Dalia, explained it to me twice in class. Very patiently too... Anyhow  it wasn't until this morning when I remembered Gabby's affirmation and asked to "see this for the first time" that I realised I wasn't working on clearing or activating an object, I was healing myself. The panorama changes and they way you draw the symbol does too. So yes, this was my super stubborn way of learning to see for first time; I'm glad it is done and I can get back to activating my planets!

Interested In Affirmations?

Affirmations are wonderful if we know to pay attention to the feeling that arises when we say them. Is the feeling aligned with the phrase you send out to the Universe??? I like to combine affirmations with colouring, mandalas, music and even Reiki, as laid out in my Chakra Healing & Magick book. It is funny because I feel I channeled my Higher Self into the book and I’m now using it to heal myself. Hope it helps you too! See link in bio or check out the bookstore, HERE

Two Minute Meditation

It's been a little while since my last post and I feel like I am cheating with this 2 Minute Meditation where I do and say nothing, but that is what mindfulness is about: bringing your attention back to the moment and enjoying or observing what it is. The goal is not to close your eyes, quiet the mind or to lose yourself in cool darkness. Instead, we seek to turn down the volume of our thoughts by bringing our attention to our breath and focusing our relaxed gaze on one spot.

This is my favorite meditation spot, though if I am honest, I do not go there enough. If you would like to join me please pull this up on your computer's big screen, sit in a chair with your back straight, bring your attention to your breathe and just observe the plant. You will also hear water in the background ...

Two minutes to relax your mental, emotional and physical bodies - that is all it takes!

A Brief History of Reiki (And Sunshine!)

Reiki was discovered by Mikao Usui in the early 1920's. A lifelong buddhist, Usui believed that satori (enlightenment) could be reached through meditation, prayer and fasting. As legend has it, thus began the lonely climb up Japan's Mount Kurumaya. Usui resolved to meditate for 21 days and nights until he reached satori or died trying. Instead, Usui got Reiki.

In the west Reiki is known as a healing technique which can be used to clear, balance and heal the mind and the body. The word Reiki can be translated as Rei = divine intelligence, and Ki = life force energy. Reiki Healers channel this universal spiritual energy through their palm chakras to their clients facilitating the recipient's self-healing process.

Thanks to its Buddhist approach to personal development, Reiki has evolved into a spiritual path which has been embraced by thousands around the world. At the heart of the Reiki philosophy are the Five Core Principles:

Just for today, do not worry
Just for today, do not anger
Just for today, honor your parents, teachers and elders
Just for today, earn your living honestly
Just for today, show your gratitude to every living thing

These principles acknowledge the fact that all we have is the present moment and the choices it gives us. We can choose to be honest, respectful, grateful (and I would add, proactive) today. We can also become aware of the fearful thoughts that affect our wellbeing. Though planning for the future is a necessity, worrying does not help much. It can be hard to keep your cool in this pressure cooker we call life (we are human, after all) and the Reiki Philosophy can be very grounding, practical and gratifying. It teaches us to:

Do what you must today (with love and gratitude!) for today is all we really have!

On a personal level, I have always experienced Reiki as the brightest of lights, especially when I received my Reiki Master attunements, which enable us to teach it to others. This Reiki light was a godsend when I lived in foggy London, as I felt like I had a bit of Reiki sunshine to see me through the rain. Likewise we can channel that Reiki sunshine to bring light into our lives, especially if we need a booster.

The Value of Mindfulness vs Meditation

Today I would like to talk about Mindfulness - essentially being present and focused in our daily lives, as opposed to Meditation, which  usually involves quieting the mind and focusing it for a brief period of time.

So for example, you could meditate for 20 minutes by listening to your breath, picturing a candle in your mind's eye or by following a guided meditation. I love meditations, especially when they talk us through healing mind, body and spirit. Or better yet, when we access our intuition to ask for guidance. Eventually the meditation has to come to an end and we bring ourselves back to our senses so we can go about our daily lives.

This is where Mindfulness comes into play. It's about hanging onto that sense of peace, awareness and grounding in our waking hours. In my case, it's usually about coming out of my cloud of thoughts so that I'm aware of my energy, my surroundings and my mind. A quick way to switch off our thoughts would be to focus on our breath as we go about our daily tasks. Another would be to take stock of your surroundings and your physical sensations. Is it warm? How do your clothes feel against your skin? What are the make and model of the cars that are parked on the street as you walk by. Listen for sounds of birds, traffic, etc. Our five senses can bring us into a moment of complete awareness.

Being mindful is also about noticing our thought patterns and staying in the moment, instead of getting lost in a daydream or worrying about the future. It can be hard to be present 24/7, but we can set reminders to bring us back. I recently asked for advice on Reddit and got a few wonderful suggestions:

  • Focus on your breath during the day, take deep breaths to calm down.
  • Set an alarm on your phone throughout the day and make a note of where your thoughts are. Take the opportunity to bring yourself back to the moment, and if you notice a thought pattern make sure to write it down. This may be what needs to be healed and released on a subconscious level.
  • Wear a mindfulness bracelet as a reminder. My version of this is to wear my watch on the wrong wrist one or two days a week. The odd physical sensation brings me back to the moment and also makes me more aware.
  • Start by sitting down to meditate for 15 minutes and then transition into a mindfulness meditation, where you focus your attention on something like housework, cooking or doing the dishes.

The end result is a welcome mental vacation because worrying, fretting and scenario planning can add a lot of stress to our lives. I really like Eckhart Tolle's approach to mindfulness and I'm a huge fan of his book, A New Earth. Tolle suggests that we can observe our thoughts to get some distance and slowly break the habit of worrying. Planning for our future and carefully reacting to changes is necessary, but constantly worrying about potential obstacles is not. It's also been said that 70/80/90% of the things we worry about never happen, and that life happens when we're in the moment, not wrapped up in our thoughts. So don't worry, be happy and be mindful and grateful for everything.

Doing, Thinking or Being?

I had a great reading this week (Awww, I am going to miss my psychic school when I move to Mexico next month). I have always considered myself a doer and an (over) thinker. And now that I am a qualified Healer, I assumed that I would do a lot of healings. Busy busy.

What the reading suggested, however, was that I simply be. Without trying to do anything, and that the healing would happen by proximity. Maybe I give off happy healing vibes (smiling!). I like the idea and it also takes some of the pressure off.

This Tuesday I will put it in practice. It's my first official day befriending cancer patients at the centre where I practice Reiki. The job description for a befriender is to sit and listen. It's not about doing anything to help (there is only so much you can do or say). We're just there for them.

Yesterday's readings couldn't have come at a better time. The past few months I have been keen to volunteer as  a Healer but it's about what they need, not what I think I have to offer. And if the client needs me to sit and hold the space, that works for me.

Google Wants Us All to Live Longer

Yesterday I was reading about a new venture that Google has: making us live longer. Maybe they are hoping to embarrass us with goofy pics from our misspent youth when we are well into our hundreds.

Larry Page announced the new venture on his Google + account (luckily the media picked it up as I am still a Facebook gal). They hope to tackle health care issues that will extend our life expectancy.

But do we really want to live that much longer? Maybe it depends on the quality of life we can expect. How healthy will we be in our 80's, 90's, 100's? Or beyond?

What would you do with the extra time, all those moments? Am I making the most of the moment I have right now? Maybe we could focus on living today, being present and enjoying it. Day in and day out. That could be worth more to us in the long run ...

I am curious to see what Google comes up with.

Quieting the Mind is a Vacation in Itself

Today I tried a new approach when I was closing down my healing client after our first session. I asked two of her overworked chakras to take a holiday and try to switch off for the next week or two! One of them readily accepted and the other one pushed back LOL.

This client had an overactive brow/mind that was feedings lots of worrying thoughts into the solar plexus. This in turn, manifests as anxiety and stress, which the client is very aware of. She asked me to work on anxiety in the healing session and after clearing, balancing and healing the SP for about 10 minutes I was finally led to the brow. What else did I do during the session? I cleared her channel and there was a lot of clutter near the solar plexus. I also worked on her heart chakra and put in a strong grounding chord from the heart to the centre of the earth.

It wasn't until I was closing her down that this idea of a holiday came to mind. I've read about chakras switching off for a short period when they need a break, but I had never thought of suggesting it. Her solar plexus really welcomed the idea of a prolonged holiday. I told it that the heart could take over for the next week and intercept any worrying thoughts. Hopefully these will just go down the grounding chord to the centre of the earth. Next time I do a healing I will talk to the solar plexus again and ask it to send anything it doesn't want down that grounding chord.

The brow chakra is going to be a tricky one to work with. Her mind is still very active, and there is a big difference between thinking, worrying and seeing. What our minds eye really needs to do is see clearly so that our heart chakra can process the information and make a decision. For those of us who are very analytical, the problems start to arise when we let our brow chakra hang on to all of the information and expect it to make a decision on it's own. Things are more than what they appear to be, and only our heart chakra can make sense of it all. This healing client was a bit of a mirror for myself as well. I've spent a lot of time lately worrying and thinking about the future. Instead I should just let it slide and wait for things to happen - if they ever do! So many of the things that we worry about never happen. It is more relaxing to go with the flow and deal with things as they come. If we are grounded and centred I'd like to think the universe and our guides will send warning signs before something big happens.

I will take my own advice and give my brow chakra a holiday for the rest of the month. I am also going to go off coffee - for real this time - and I am going to work on being grounded, in my body and aware of my surroundings. This will help me take it easy and I will only deal with what is right in front of me! A nice mental holiday!

What Will 2012 Bring - A New Earth ?

Yesterday I spent the day with a group of Arab friends and the conversation turned to the unrest in the Middle East. They talked about Egypt - how unexpected the revolution has been as well as the way it came about. The region has seen a lot of violence and upheaval in a short period of time, while the rest of the world enjoys a relatively stable existence.

It reminded me of a theory in a book called The Power of Kabbalah which consists of two realities co-existing over the next few generations. The idea is that on an individual basis we will either live in constant chaos or we will thrive in peace. Our reality will depend on our beliefs and perspectives, and if we've modified our actions to reflect a spirit of cooperation.

One of the things I love about 2011 is that we're seeing this awakening on so many levels. The road can be as dramatic as the revolution in Egypt, but it can also be very subtle. The good news is that we are already seeing pockets of light emerge all over the world. Just yesterday I had a nice little revelation when I was watching a clip of Jim Carrey on Oprah.

The segment touches on Eckhart Tolle's philosophy that the moment is all we have, but that most of us won't live it to the full because we're trapped by our thoughts. The example Jim Carrey uses is one that I fall into a lot, and it shed light on a major blind spot of mine. Who would have thought that this change in perspective would come about so easily? And now the only thing that can keep me from effecting change in my life is my ability to control my thoughts and to become aware of my mind.

When I think about 2012 I get the impression that change will come for everyone but the way it happens will be determined by the degree of freedom enjoyed by each society. Whenever I ask my classmates about the Mayan Prophecies the response is always the same. None of the psychics I've met will tell you the world is coming to an end. They speak of a new level of consciousness emerging, and in some cases an end to the status quo.

Even astrology speaks of old power structures falling, and as I am writing this the image that comes to mind is the The Tower. This tarot card represents the beliefs and structures we hold that no longer serve us, and of the need to demolish them. We can only alter our own reality, so take a close look at your life and think about what you could do better, and how you own interactions with others could be more equitable.

I have always had a deep sense of fairness, it's even in my astrology chart to root for the underdog in any situation. As a society we need to start thinking about how the world is experienced by others, including animals and the ecosystem. Our position in the world can be likened to a scale, we can be on the upside or on the downside. It is in our best interest to make sure the leveling off isn't disruptive.

The next few years are going to see a lot of change, and anything that doesn't create a win-win result for the earth's inhabitants may need to change. We can be proactive with this change or we can wait for it to happen to us. There is a lot more to this than rooting for the underdog and caring for others (though it's a good start!), my intuition tells me that we also need to balance our karmas and raise our vibration. This is the task I've set out for myself, and I hope it will keep me on that positive side of the dual-reality.
