Are Spirit Guides Real??

Over the years, I've had many takes on this question. Are spirit guides figments of our unconscious or our imagination? I think it's important to be open to being wrong, and not to become too attached to our beliefs.

But first, what are spirit guides?

The idea is that when we ask our intuition for answers, the answer can come from several places - I cover these options in my book, Chakra Healing & Magick, but basically, our intuition brings messages from the angels, spirit guides, your higher self and some would say, from God.

I didn't include the last one in my book, but basically, spirit guides are humans who lived on Earth and that have wisdom or special experience to share with us. Growing up Catholic, this didn't feel like a stretch because I was used to asking a particular saint for help. Like St Francis of Assisi. Asking an ancestor for guidance is common in Mexico too. But after I found my psychic school, my guides became a lot more colorful than that. In the past I've blogged about how I used to see a wizard in my early days as a psychic student. Funny enough, he helped me negotiate a new job for myself, with a much better salary.

But even then, I thought the wizard was a figment of my imagination, and I'd push him aside. Then my classmates started seeing him too, and I finally decided to take him seriously. This was in 2010 to 2011, when I was a newbie. I was still scared of magick and intuition - on one hand, I didn't think magick was real and I worried people would think I had lost my mind. This went on for a few years - even after I'd graduated as an energy healer. By 2015, I was completely sold on healing yourself with magick. Soon after, I started writing my magick book.

Round about that time, the wizard guide disappeared and I began to wonder if he had been a figment of my imagination or my unconscious. The latter would have been just as valuable as a real spirit guide...

My assumption was that the clairvoyant image was there to awaken the healer or magician in me, and that when I embodied that, he disappeared. I was sad when that happened, but magick is about who we become. Not that I'm a wizard LOL, but now I feel happy and comfortable talking about crystals, astrology, psychic abilities etc.

So imagine my surprise, when I started teaching intuition in 2016. My first big workshop was on psychic abilities, angels and goddesses. I led the students on a few guided meditations before putting them in small groups. Each of the groups would connect with an angel or guide - a mystical musical chairs where the students changed places to feel the energy of an angel vs. an archangel vs. a goddess. I had attended a similar workshop with one of my tutors, in 2010, when I was starting out. Loved it 🔮

> When I was splitting them up into 4-5 groups, that wizard guide came back and asked me to put him with a group. I told that specific group that they were connecting with one of my guides - a wizard. They expected someone solemn to appear, say Gandalf, but he is playful and fun. The cool thing is that when the students in that group talked about their experiences, they'd all seen and felt the same things. Like literally the same clairvoyant images, sensations etc. I wasn't guiding the meditation or telling them what to see, because five groups were meditating at the same time, each with a different archangel, guide or goddess.

So yes, I'm back to spirit guides being real. I have been there since 2016 LOL. They can be a lot of fun to connect with. Have a look at Chapter 6 for details: Psychic Development for Beginners 🌟🌟🌟

Calling on Spirit Guides in Tarot Readings

The Law of Attraction works in funny ways. They say that what we think about or feel very strongly will manifest around us, and this is cool if you are manifesting things you love (if not always straightforward). But there is at least one area where this "law" can trip us up: tarot readings.

Let's say you go for a tarot reading and you're worried about your job or your marriage. That fear or worry is held in your Aura, and when the cards are shuffled and drawn, instead of drawing the messages that your guides and angels want you to hear, we draw images that appear to confirm those fears. I think this is one of the reasons why some people are scared of tarot. Luckily this can be remedied by following a few simple steps.

Start By Clearing Yourself

Whenever I sit down with a client, we begin the reading with a short energy healing meditation to help the person ground, clear and shield their energy - toning down any fears that they may have about their lives, relationships and careers. Strong emotions are magnets of sorts, and the last thing we want to do is pull a card that appears to confirm their fear when it is just mirroring it.

Next, we call on Archangel Michael to place a bubble of protective light around us, before calling on one of the client's spirit guides to join us. We always ask for guides of the highest and most loving vibration for that person. As opposed to angels, guides were once human and their advice is more grounded, practical and earthly than angels. Spirit guides know what it is like to be in relationships, to raise kids, and to think about rent or to negotiate a raise at work.

Their guidance broadens our perspective, but we are always responsible for our decisions. Rather than ask what to do or what might happen, I like to ask where I am tripping up (for example).

Self-Awareness Triggers

The other thing that I love about spirit guides, is that having been human, they are well aware of our psychological pitfalls and are quick to call us on our BS. The archangels can be confrontational too, especially Archangel Michael, but guides are as direct as that Sagittarius best friend who says exactly what he sees.

If the thought of connecting with spirit guides sounds a bit too sci-fi, you can also set the intention to catch up with your Higher Self or Inner Guide.

Once you’ve have grounded and cleared yourself and the tarot cards (read Ch 1 in Chakra Healing & Magick), think about the situation that needs healing and visualize a stream of silver light coming down from the heavens. Stay with this 2 minutes.

The light flows into the deck and adds the magnetism necessary to pull the cards that will illustrate your spirit guide's message in way that you are sure to understand it.

Before interpreting the cards in a session, I always ask the client which one evokes the strongest emotional reaction. This is usually the one that needs attention, and from that card, we can unravel the message. The feeling needs healing.

You can do the same; be sure to ground, clear and shield yourself at the end.

The Four Elements.

If you have read my book, Chakra Healing & Magick, you will know that the Tarot's Minor Arcana can be divided into four suits of cards: Water, Earth, Air and Fire. Each  of these elements corresponds to a personal quality that we need to thrive: empathy and personal relationships (💦), spiritual and material wealth (🌴), logic and peace of mind (🚁), and creativity or passion (🔥).

Based on the cards that come up in a tarot reading and the ones that we are most drawn to, we know where the client's internal blocks, fears and worries lie - and where their opportunities for growth can be found. This can be addressed with energy healing meditations to work through those issues in the Aura. We can use energy healing and crystal magic to work through all of these issues, as discussed in the final chapters of Chakra Healing & Magick.

Any deck based on Rider-Waite will work, but for energy healing purposes, the more vivid the images, the better. The ones I have been using in healing sessions are Everyday Witch by Deborah Blake and The Wizards Tarot by Corrine Kenner. The Enchanted Tarot by Amy Zerner is also great. Clearly, I love the magical associations but the designs are fantastic.

The 13 Original Clan Mothers & The Moon

Six months ago I joined a weekly circle where we meet up at each other's houses and take turns presenting metaphysical subjects that we are into. Its been lots of fun; earlier this year I got to teach tarot and astrology and I am now I am back as a student, which I love. This week we kicked off with a new round of classes on Mayan spirituality, specifically the 13 cycles of the moon, from New Moon to Full Moon and what we learn about ourselves as we start to peel back the layers of the ego. The round of classes will span 26 weeks, I will be working on it into the New Year.

Exploring The Mayan World View

This week kicked off with a bit of theory on the Mayan "World View" of the human being as a functioning, sentient being that is part of the Universe but not all of it, just like a kidney is a functioning organ that is part of the human body and not separate from it (but also, not one and the same with the whole). The idea was that we each have a function to complete on earth, just like the kidney has a specific role, and that by fulfilling that function all of our needs would be met. This contrasts to our modern world view where the belief could be that we are competing with each other for jobs, money, resources, promotions, etc - and that through that world view, we have created a system that validates and reinforces those beliefs. I'm not sure how this fits in with the 13 moons, but the idea was intriguing ...

Yesterday's overarching theme was relationships - our relationship with the world whether it is a human being, a tree or an animal. The teacher encouraged us to sit in meditation and connect with plants and animals to receive their guidance. We did this in a short meditation where each of us was guided to meet one of our power animals, and to connect with a particular kind of tree and ask it what kind of healing it could give us. The tree that came to mind for me was the Eucalyptus, and it told me that we could receive its healing by chewing on its leaves. Afterwards, our teacher told us that Eucalyptus trees were about taking a breathe and resting, if you will. With regards to my power animal, I saw three: a spider, which I ignored and asked my intuition to give my something else. Then came a flying squirrel, which I saw as a cartoon character from the Sword in the Stone. I also got the lyrics to Seal's Fly Like an Eagle, along with a visual of an eagle flying over a lake and diving into to cool down.

After the meditation we discussed what we'd seen - the spider represents creativity so I guess it says something about my current creative process when I ignored the spider and waited for it to move along. The squirrel I think was about finding freedom, stretching your wings and also finding a bit of magic in our daily lives. Finally I'm not sure what the eagle represents and my homework was to connect with its energy in my daily meditations. It was pretty cool overall. The class we are taking is based on books by a woman called Jaime Sams, who has written extensively about Native American spirituality. I believe this specific course is based on the material in her book, the 13 Original Clan Mothers. She also published a set of Medicine Cards that I have been eyeing for years: The Discovery of Power Through the Way of the Animals.

Relationships As Reflections of Ourselves

The first moon's overarching theme is relationships as mirrors; how what we dislike in other people is often something that we are disowning in ourselves. And what we like in others are often qualities that we like in ourselves. So our relationship with the world is largely dependent on our relationship to ourselves, and in order to soften those triggers, we need to look within. Here's an example, let's say I'm super annoyed by people who show off. Is there a part of me that wants to show off but doesn't? Or is there an aspect of my life where I can't help showing off?

Along the same lines, when we think about what it is about a person that makes us like them, could it be that we have that same quality and it is one of the things that we like about ourselves? So for example, I am drawn to people who are happy and smile a lot (aren't we all?) and its usually people who are uncomplicated and happy that I like spending time with. Though it may be an aspirational mirror as I am quite  happy and uncomplicated, but I could probably have more sunshine in my life. I think that is why I'm so drawn to Reiki, it is like a burst of sunshine in your mind's eye.

Our homework is to try and be more aware of what it is that draws us to other people (or away from them) and how those traits could be a reflection of ourselves. This is a theory that I was already familiar with, especially with regards to opposites in astrology. For example, as an Aquarius, I can be put off by Leo's drive to shine but really, it is just the opposite side of my coin. What I see as separate from myself is part of my disowned shadow. Let's think about what that means...

Update 2025: The class I took emphasized the Mayan tradition - Jamie Sam’s book is on Native American spirituality. Por si las moscas …

Things Every Psychic Explorer Should Know

Last year I signed up for an advanced class at my psychic school - our tutor focused on the skills needed to teach the intuitive arts. Students flex their chakras and give each other messages. It dawned on me, there are four things I wish I'd known (with certainty) when I was starting out.

1) Everyone has psychic abilities, even if they don't know it. I was vaguely aware of this in school. Intuition is an ability that we all possess to an extent, and we can meditate to develop it further. But I didn't understand how psychic we really were until the years flew by and I began teaching. At first, I couldn't help smiling when a student mentioned feeling strong heat in their palms, often a sign of healing abilities, or when several saw the same clairvoyant image in their mind's eye during meditations. Students often mention seeing a specific image, like an apple or a color, before I described it in a clairvoyant meditation. These comments rang a bell.

2) Awakening our intuition is a process. We may start by feeling temperature changes, seeing flashes of color, or with fleeting thoughts. Then our angels and guides reveal themselves in our mind's eye. These are signposts along the way, letting us know that we are on the right track. I was lucky enough to keep a journal in the form of this blog; as I see my students evolve, I recognize many of the steps that I went through four or five years ago. As a teacher, it is easier to trust the process than it was as a student. There were plenty of times when I was sure I would never be able to give a full reading. The ability to receive messages builds with practice.

3) We open up and advance at our own pace. Some of my classmates went through the intro and intermediate levels in six months while others took years. I think this may have something to do with our astrology. I suspect that people with plenty of Water (intuition, emotions) and Fire (divine spark) in their charts are naturally more intuitive than those of us who have more Earth (practical, materialistic) and Air (logic) in our charts. There are benefits to having lots of Earth or Air - we have more grounding to build on, and intuitive thoughts flow quickly when they start to appear. But to begin with, that materialism and my rational mind were big hurdles.

The fourth I did know as my teachers were fantastic. Always begin a session by grounding, clearing and shielding your personal space. Grounding makes it possible for us to receive practical messages, clearing releases any emotions that we may have absorbed from others and shielding keeps us safe.
