It's Time to Go be a Healer!

My healing certificate came in the post this week! Yay! I can go be a healer now. I haven't seen it yet, but my cousin just rang to let me know it was delivered. I am still crashing with friends until my flat is ready for me to move in at the end of the month - feeling very nomadic at the moment.

Now I can start getting my things in order. I was planning on looking up a few healing clinics in my area to see if they have any vacancies. The Life Center in Notting Hill looks promising, and as far as I can tell, they don't have energy healing. There is also another place nearby where I've had sessions.

Last week I started to put my business site together too. It's not ready to be published just yet, and I hope to have it in the next two or three days. My sister's roomate came up with a really url for my website:  www.reikina.com (reiki + regina = reikina!). The site is called Reiki with Regina.

I might post health and wellness related topics there, and keep this blog for my adventures and exploits in healing and psychic school. We shall see. This Diary of a Psychic Healer blog is my creative outlet and the other one will could be more mainstream. So much to do! I am really excited about it all :-)

Is Energy Healing a Placebo?

One of the questions that comes up often is whether people need to believe in healing for it to have a positive effect. If that were the case, it would be very easy to classify Energy Healing as a placebo. The answer is no, but it helps if they are willing to consider the possibility that it might work. It's hard to heal someone who outright rejects it.

Skeptical clients give the healer just enough leeway. A client has to be willing to accept healing, whether or not they believe it actually works. On some level they will benefit, even if it's not apparent in the first instance. The healing might not be physical, so its important to be clear about expectations.

The goal of healing is not to cure physical symptoms. I recently read a few posts on a science blog called Science Based Medicine. It was created by a group of doctors who spend their time debunking complementary therapies like healing, acupuncture and natural remedies. The often use phrases like "an elaborate placebo" when they talk about energy healing. I think the disconnect lies with the outcome we each want to achieve. Doctors work with the physical body and their main objective is to manage symptoms and treat diseases. Their work requires extensive skill and expertise, though it can be one dimensional if we think of the mind-body-spirit as three aspects in an individual's life.

Energy Healing is said to work on four levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. There isn't a priority when it comes to energy healing, so the change may happen on any of these. One of the things I like about energy healing, is that it can involve asking what the illness means symbolically. What can they learn from the illness? The physical symptom will give us a clue about what that lesson is.

Let's illustrate the point with the example of diabetes in a client. The healer's goal is not to cure or manage diabetes, they should be seeing a doctor for this. The energy healer will think about what diabetes means in the client's life. How are  the pancreas and the heart affected on an emotional level? They might have trouble balancing their career ambitions with their personal life. When we have a loving personal relationships, life is sweet. If that natural sweetness is consistently denied, a person might overcompensate with sugary foods that push their insulin level through the roof. Energy Healing addresses that internal clash between happiness, and ego driven ambition. Through the healing, the client might see their life in a new light. This facilitates the healing process, though it may not have an effect on the body. People who want to classify energy healing as a placebo are only looking at one aspect of human existence: the physical level.

I am not sure how you would even go about measuring mental, emotional or spiritual healing. Psychologists have practice with the mental and emotional side. Would it be possible to quantify the effect on the energy body; for example, how would you document an aura or a chakra clearing? And if you capture the energy flow on film, say with photography, what does that mean for the person's biology? I find all of this fascinating. Individual clients may report sensations during a healing session, but what actually happens to their energy?

Update! I'm pleased to share that in 2020 I found  more answers - have a look at this post on The Science Behind Energy Healing

The Hanged Man (or Woman)

My last post was on the Ho'oponopono.  I can't write it, but I love mispronouncing it! Oponoponu, or Onupononu. I can laugh myself silly trying to spell it out. Spelling debacles aside, I like the thought behind this Hawaian Healing Mantra. One of the premises of the Onoponono is the idea that our Inner Child is in control (scary thought), and it creates things based on our attitudes. Everything that happens to us - good, bad or in between - is a choice.

Sometimes we choose things consciously, sometimes not. We also sabotage ourselves unconsciously. I think we all do this to varying degrees and it is something to watch out for. It may also be about paying attention to the signs, and making changes proactively. So what have I created lately in an unpleasant way? I messed up my healing exam, for starters. Which means I will have to put my healing practice on hold for a few months until I can take it again.

What a pain!

I am annoyed with myself, especially because my intuition warned me not to make a particular mistake. Unfortunately I was nervous and I didn't make the link. It only dawned on me after I left. Oops! I'll have to take it again in a couple of months. That may be the thought I find least appealing but I'll deal with it when the time comes. In the meantime, I think I might take a sabbatical. Healing has taken up a lot of my time the past two years, and there are other things I would like to catch up on. Friends and family for starters, psychic readings and angel readings, writing, etc. Plus there's that publishing company I've just started, and the books I am planning to launch in the next couple of months. When I left the exam I pulled a card and got the Hanged Man (LOL). This card is about a period of non-action, and looking at things from a different angle.

I am being philosophical about the whole thing. I have to cut back on something or I'll go mad. Maybe its time I gave healing a rest. I am disappointed but looking at the bright side, I have time to write my books. So back to work it is. Maybe I'll go for a jog first. It is a nice day outside and we don't get a lot of sun in London.

Why Esoteric Bookstores Aren't for Me

As a teenager, I was fluent in French. I hardly ever practice these days and it is starting to slip. This weekend I made it my mission to buy a french language book on energy healing. I'd love to learn about healing and practice my French in one go! We walked all over Paris today and eventually found ourselves outside an esoteric bookshop. It was part of a chain. Each location has a theme, so if you're looking for something in particular you need to find the store before you set out. It can be annoying to walk past 5 or 6 stores before you find one that covers what you're looking for, but there are benefits too. When you finally find your store, there will be tons of books on the topic.

If I walk into a Waterstone's, the Mind Body Spirit section might be one or two bookshelves. At the Esoteric shop, all of the books are on topics like personal development, spirituality, divination, occultism, Kabbalah, astrology, channeling, magic, buddhism, hinduism, tantra, meditation, animal communication, dream interpretation, and numerology. I spent forty minutes browsing and left without buying anything. There were way too many choices, and more than that, the energy in the shop was too much for me to handle! Most of the books were used. Maybe that is why I felt confused and overwhelmed when I was in there. They had too much energy lingering on them. Lots of energetic gunk.

I couldn't find a single one that I wanted to read. At first I thought it was my rusty French that made it harder to relate to the descriptions. Then I started wondering, who were all these authors and where did they get their information? Why should I read their books? I have too many ideas in my head already. Still wanting to practice my French, I started looking for English or American author's whose work had been translated. There were lots of Doreen Virtue, Neal Donald Walsh and Wayne Dyer books. I couldn't bring myself to buy any of them. It wasn't the first time I left an alternative shop empty handed.

The same thing happened when I went to a store near Covent Garden in London. I had to leave that one because I got a bad stomach ache. One of my friends was waiting for a reading and I started getting very anxious. It took a while for it to wear off. I think picked something up in there. I only felt like myself again when I walked into a public loo and told it to flush itself. LOL. That was an experience I don't want to repeat.

Today I bathed myself in a white light when we left the store. It is just dawning on me that I could have protected myself when I went in there. Esoteric shops can be full of gunk. I still prefer my mainstream book stores. And when it comes to crystals, I will stop by the Natural History Museum for "mass produced crystals". I'd rather buy something that has been handled by dozens of tourists, and not healers, psychics and spiritualists. The place feels clearer because they haven't been used.

Color Healing and Shopping!

This morning I woke up at 9.30 am stressed because it was late. I don't know what's wrong with me! I think it is the pressure. I want to get by book edited as soon as possible, but it’s finally starting to dawn on me that I shouldn’t be in such a hurry. I am almost done, and I should be ready to publish the book before January. So instead of sitting down to work, I went shopping. Yes, shopping! Sometimes a girl needs to buy new clothes. It has been cold in London, and my winter clothes are worn out. That is what happens when I shop at H&M and Zara.  Clothes don't last as long as they used to. Time to get new sweaters and long sleeve T's. I went to Uniqlo and spend 20 minutes trying on jackets in different colours. Blue is usually my colour, but the one I saw today was dark. I need some colour in my life! I finally settled on brown, which is great for grounding, and made my way to the checkout counter.

On my way out, I spotted the same jacket in pale blue and in white. I don't know how I missed them! Thirty seconds later I was trying them on in front of the mirror. Light and bright colours make me feel so much better than dark ones. Ever since I moved to London my wardrobe has gone navy, gray and black. It's time I put a stop to that. Today I realised that I can practice colour healing when I go shopping, especially if I go into a store with the same things in millions of different colours. What is colour healing, you may ask? Colour and sound both have vibrational qualities that we can use to give our frequency a tune up. Red grounds and activates my energy. White and silver clear and raise my vibration. They can also protect me, as does the colour purple. I love purple, green, red and white. Those are the colours I should be wearing. Pale blue has a healing quality to it. I don't relate to orange and yellow. A couple years ago, a substitute teacher came to my psychic development class with a pile of ribbons. He threw them on a pile in the middle of the floor and told us to choose the one that we were drawn to. I went for violet. We then used the colours to give each other psychic readings. One of my classmates picked a bright red ribbon, and when I tuned it, I saw a lollipop. It was about her childish appetite for life. My violet ribbon was about my crown chakra opening up to intuition and spirit.

Colour Healing may be about using the vibrational quality of colour to heal our energy system, but it can also tell you a lot about yourself. Ask yourself what you see in a particular colour. How does it make you feel? I think this is why some people talk about being "green with envy" or "feeling blue". We can relate to the intuitive world of feelings through colours  Today I'm pale blue. Tomorrow I might leave the house wearing red or black. Black can be elegant, and it can also help camouflage your feelings. It's black, but not dark. I love walking into a store and finding clothes that come in zillions of colours. Today I went back to the sales desk and exchanged the jacket. It shouldn't have been necessary to try them on so many times, but I had to feel it to make the choice. I hope its cold this weekend!

Irrational Fears and Fragmented Souls

As a kid I was terrified of the Virgin Mary. We used to hear stories about other children who had seen her, for example at Fatima and in Yugoslavia. The topic came up often at our Catholic School and the kids were always revered.

Once or twice we heard of very holy children who saw her and died young. What terrified me though, was the thought of a supernatural being appearing in the 1st place. How scary! When we prayed I would ask her not to appear and I would also keep my eyes shut. The thought of seeing her freaked me out. Growing up in a Catholic family, you can imagine how much this stressed me out. It wasn’t just the Virgin Mary that scared me. I was also scared of seeing angels. Ghosts and monsters didn’t frighten me so much because I didn’t think they were real.

Why was I so worried about seeing an angel? Not sure this is the answer, but something came up in one of my classes this year. We were learning about Soul Retrievals and one of my classmates tried to heal me and I rejected it. Soul Retrieval has to do with traumatic experiences that are too much for us to assimilate, and this causes a piece of our soul to break off. In a session the healer would use clairvoyance and intuition to identify the moment when the soul fractured and then use healing to bring it back. This is how we would describe it in spiritual terms. A doctor who works with the human mind might look at it in a different angle.

So how does this tie into my fear of seeing the supernatural?  My classmate sensed a toddler Geena who was frightened by a ghoul in the streets. She told me that the experience has traumatized me and I'd blocked it out.  I was also blocking my clairvoyance. Funny thing is I think she's right. I can feel, hear and sense Ascended Masters and angels but I do not see them clearly. And I never see earth bound spirits. She tried to send healing to my toddler-self, but I wasn't ready to accept it. Even now I am reluctant to see dark energies and spirits. When people ask I like to reply that I only see nice things. One of my friends heard this and told me we shouldn’t be scared of the dark. After all you can only see light in darkness.

It's been a few weeks since the session and I've been meditating on it. Still wondering if and when I'll be ready to integrate that part of my soul again. Would I mean that I'll see everything? I think I want to. It all goes hand in hand with some of the other fun topics that we've studied in school, including Spirit Release. So far I've had one instance where I am sure that my client had some sort of spirit attached. I could feel it in the room but I couldn't see it. In that case I asked Archangel Michael to come take it away and only held the space. It was not as scary as I thought it would be and I was left with a little bit of an adrenalin rush at the end of the session. It took me a while to figure out what was going on.

Why is it so hard to quit smoking?

I asked this question on Facebook and got lots of great responses (read them here).  My initial thoughts on the topic are that we need to have a real reason to LIVE, be it someone or something that we want to stick around for. With good quality of life and lots of zest for living. I arrived at this conclusion because when a person smokes they extinguish the part of the body that regulates our life force. We can survive with out food, water, shelter for days but how long can you last without breathing? The smoke also clouds our ability to receive guidance and intuition from our angels. More to come on that later ....

I've spent a couple minutes thinking about why people might find it hard to quit - beyond the nicotine addiction and the habit:

  • Taking deep breaths is good for the body, the brain and the spirit. Smokers generally take deep breaths when they are smoking and the body mistakes the benefits of air for a benefit of smoking. It makes them feel more alert, but so would a pure deep breath and a liter of water. I'm not a smoker but I experienced a similar sensation with fizzy drinks and coffee. A year ago I realised that I never drank water. If I was thirsty or bored I'd reach for a Diet Coke or an Iced Coffee. One day this occurred to me and I reached for a glass of water before having my morning coffee. WOW. I also noticed that when I felt like snacking it was usually moisture rich foods.  What I really needed was to drink water.  I think smokers crave a nicotine fix but their body also craves a nice dose of fresh air.
  • Clearing your head is a good way to bring in new ideas and inspiration. When people fall into the habit of going outside to smoke, as is often the case because of smoking bans, they are craving some quiet time alone and "fresh air" ... this helps them clear their muddled brow chakras and go back to their desks with a little relaxation. Taking a cigarette break is like meditating in that it lets you escape for a few minutes and focus your mind. This could just as easily be done without a cigarette though it might feel strange at first. Try taking a meditation break instead of a ciggy break and see how it feels!
  • The sacral chakra is the one most often affected by addictions. It contains our desires, passions and our emotional link to the outside world as well. The heart is the seat of love, but the emotions are in the sacral chakra. Any addiction masks the feelings that we are not prepared to deal with. In healing sessions we are often taught to focus on the sacral chakra when the client has an addiction to recover from, no matter what it is. This can be cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, TV, shopping, etc. People with addictions need help managing their emotions in a constructive way, which in turn will prevent them from desensitising their experience of the emotional situations. The sacral sits just under the belly button. Below that we have the root chakra. These two chakras are linked to our  impulse control. A healthy chakra system can make it easier to resist (more will power!), problem is that addictions can weaken these chakras. Downward spiral here we come ....
  • Back to my original thought - just about everyone has someone or something to live for.  And they'd want to live long and live well. So how does this will to live link with the willpower to quit smoking? It is the moment when the = fear of missing out on a life experience is bigger than the fear of actually experiencing that very experience. Scary stuff.
See here for a post on Addictions & the Sacral Chakra.

Grounding 101 - by Justin Luria

It's my pleasure to introduce a guest post by Justin Luria from Healing for Grounding! Justin is a spiritual blogger and energy healer from the Barbara Brennan School of Healing.  He does great work with sensitive souls, helping them feel welcome on the earth and safe in their bodies.

"A big thank you to Geena for giving me the space on her blog to let me write about what I love! :-)

This is a post about grounding- what it is, why it's important, and (briefly) how to do it.

First, a quick introduction. My name is Justin, and I write a blog called Healing for Grounding. I'm not naturally a very grounded person; learning to ground has been a life-long challenge for me. So I approach this topic with patience, empathy, humour, and lots of experience :-).

So. Grounding.

If you're interested in New Age spirituality, you've probably heard that it's important to be grounded. If you're a healer, you might use the 'GAPP' protocol (Ground, Attune, Protect, Permission). You probably have an idea of what grounding entails, but might not be entirely sure, because it isn't spoken of in depth very often.

The advice given about how to ground is usually quite simple: to do exercise (especially mindful ones, like tai chi or yoga), to spend time in nature, to eat root vegetables or chocolate, and to imagine roots growing out of your feet into the earth. Which is a great start.

I'd like to take you a little deeper into grounding, if I may..

Firstly. What the hell is grounding?

In a sentence? It's the quality of your connection to the earth.

It's got a broader connotation: being present and embodied; being engaged with living life instead of living in fantasy; not too caught up in the mental. When muggles (non magickal folk) say that a person is grounded, that's usually what they mean, and it's also true in the New Age context we're talking about now.

If you're curious, you might wonder, "What is it that actually makes a person grounded? What gives a person their groundedness?". It's a good question, because once you know, you can work on your own grounding :-).

I've found there's a few things that contribute:
  • A nice juicy, charged, open root chakra
  • Good energetic+feeling contact with the lower half of your body
  • A strong flow of energy into and out of your feet (but especially into them) from the earth
  • Having your aura/energetic bodies firmly seated within your physical body (instead of hovering slightly above it, or displaced to the side)
  • Feeling safe: both in the moment, and in the broader sense of your life, trusting that you are safe as a physical being
  • Being deeply relaxed, your energetic pulsations slowed to match those of the earth (thus 'coupling' with the earth's energy field, charging you up with momma's love)
  • A clear wish to engage life fully

It probably seems like a long list, but don't worry- they're mostly interrelated, and working on one automatically helps the others. For example, it's nearly impossible to heal the root chakra without also benefiting the legs and pelvis, and feet. If you're able to discharge or process some of your fear and anxiety, your energy field will automatically seat itself more deeply into your physical body. When that happens, you feel safer, and your intention to engage with life will improve as a result. A healing cycle begins.

Consciously engaging with your grounding can take you on a beautiful journey of self-healing :-).

The reason why we bother at all with grounding is because of what it means, what it gives us. Our grounding is literally our foundation (funny how language somtimes reflects spiritual truths!). From the energy healer's perspective, the root chakra is the foundational 'key stone' that sushumna (the principal energy channel, parallel to the spine) and the other chakras rest on. If the root is in a bad state, the other chakras will be impacted. The amount of energy in the root places a cap on the amount of energy in general, and in all the other chakras.

Working on the root is, in many cases, the easiest way of unlocking difficulties found elsewhere in one's life/body/aura.

It's really common to get caught up in the grounding techniques themselves, and miss the point of the actual grounding. For example, visualisations for grounding are really popular, but probably the hardest technique to get right. It takes a lot of training and practice to be able to visualise 'correctly', and it not be a mental thing. I hope that doesn't sound judgemental- the 'correct' way to visualise with energy, as I understand it, is to use intention to effect an energetic change or movement, and witness the change as it happens. Doing it 'incorrectly' means either making a thought form, or just creating more mental energy (which, as westerners, we're very good at). A thought form might sound like it would be helpful, but it isn't; grounding really needs to come from within.

When someone like Doreen Virtue or Sue Allen speak about visualisation, I think they forget (or never knew) what it's like to be a 'normal' person; they're so used to living half in the spirit world that they don't experience much of a split between their 'thoughts' and a spiritual reaction. When they imagine a ball of pink light, it's there. When a normal person imagines a ball of pink light, the aura around their head swells slightly with the mental energy, and their general aura tinges yellow (meaning thought). No ball of pink light appears.

Something similar happens with grounding. If you like using visualisation to grow your energetic roots into the earth, then I recommend going light on the visualising: use your intention, not your imagination. Really feel those roots growing. Make it a full bodied experience, not just an exercise in imagining. For example, rather than picturing tree roots, imagine what it would feel like if you were a tree, with feet as roots going down deep into the earth.

Make it experiential, not conceptual.

Here are some easy ways I recommend to help with grounding. It helps to mix it up, so you're not putting all your eggs in one basket. Remember, grounding (and being grounded or ungrounded) isn't a problem to be solved; it's a path of getting more in contact with your body, and with the earth. So, do what works for you :-). And persevere. It may take months of daily practice before you notice the difference, if you're as deeply ungrounded as I was!
  • Physical exercises, such as those used in core-energetics and bio-energetics. Rotate your ankles, do squat thrusts (gently and mindfully!), roll your feet over a golf ball.
  • Massage, especially of the feet and legs, using calming and grounding oils (but probably not at the same time, that might not smell good!), to loosen the grounding blocks. Massage of the whole body, to release stress and fear.
  • Spending time in nature, real quality time, where you connect with the world around you, and feel your body in relation to nature. This is super important.
  • Having cranial work (cranial osteopathy, cranio-sacro therapy) to release old traumas from the body."

2021 Update from Regina: Justin contributed an essay on grounding and the root chakra to my book, titled Chakra Healing & Magick. It looks at fears that keep us from grounding.

Healing and the Endocrine System

I'm delighted to present a guest post by Alison Woodman of A.M. Healing, a student healer at the Harry Edwards Sanctuary. Alison was kind enough to share her learnings on the Endocrine System with us as it is an integral part of the energy healing curriculum. Thank You Alison for your insight and generosity!

The Body's Main Control System - by Alison Woodman

There are 11 systems that operate within our physical bodies and they are:

  • The Digestive System
  • The Urinary System
  • The Cardiovascular System
  • The Central Nervous System
  • The Skeletal System
  • The Respiratory System
  • The Muscular System
  • The Endocrine System
  • The Reproductive System
  • The Lymphatic systems
  • The Integument System

As healers we are very interested in The Endocrine system because of it's alignment with The Chakras. The Chakras are not physical but simply aspects of the consciousness in the same way that the aura is. The Endocrine System is a group of Glands controlled by the Pituitary Gland. Some describe the Pituitary gland as the orchestra conductor because this gland controls the others by sending messages relating to the secretion of hormones. If the Pituitary gland is not functioning correctly then you can bet that the other glands will be under strain too. The hormone secretion through the kidneys and liver are vitally linked to our feeling WELL and spiritual healing can be a great way to connect with Chakras and inevitably The Endocrine system. Why are they connected you may wonder? Well as luck would have it the 7 glands within The Endocrine system are aligned perfectly with the 7 Main Chakras. They are linked of that there is no doubt and listed below are the 7 Chakras , The link with the glands and the possible issues and emotions relating to them both.

Each of the following will present the chakra-gland pairing, along with the issue they are linked with:

  • Crown Charka - Pineal Gland - Spiritual denial/ migraines
  • Brow Chakra - Pituitary Gland - Truth/intuition/depression/ mood swings
  • Throat Chakra - Thyroid Gland - Communication or lack of father issues
  • Heart Chakra - Thymus Gland -Love/immune system/ balance/ trust/ jealousy
  • Solar plexus - The Pancreas - Mind/ no emotions/ fear/ diabetes/ wisdom
  • Sacral Chakra - The Adrenals - Joy/ shock/ creativity/ hysterectomy/ prostrate
  • Base Chakra - Gonads - Courage/Pysical needs/ Resentment/ Anger

So from the above information it is easy to see how working on the various Chakras during a healing session and ensuring they are fully open and spinning correctly greatly benefits that particular area of The Endocrine system as they are highly integrated. It is vitally important to look after your body with diet and exercise to ensure that the correct balance is met because after all our Biography will ultimately becomes our Biography. Look after yourselves guys x"
