Finding our Way to Inner Peace

I took a Reiki class on Monday - taught by William Rand of the International Center for Reiki Training. His school offers energy upgrades for Reiki Masters and this one was focused on World Peace. It was awesome, I honestly feel less anxiety floating around my subconscious.

The class was meant to help us cope with what seems like never ending stress and escalating conflict, with the world coming out of the pandemic, into a war.

At the time I had all of these intuitions about the absence of peace and where it comes from. I want to share my thoughts, as best I can, because a lot of it has slipped away.

Thoughts on The Absence of Peace:

  • Biological Stress and Anxiety: In some cases stress or turmoil might be due to chemical imbalances in the brain. This is not my area of work, but a person would benefit from seeing a mental health professional. One of my friends works with genetics and mental health conditions. She works with people who are affected by their DNA and not just their circumstances. Coincidentally, lifestyle factors do influence our mRna, as discussed in my first book, A Personal Guide to Self-Healing, Cancer & Love (2013).
  • Stressful Situations: There is the chaos and alarming news of the past few years, which added to our usual stress levels. The brain is wired to keep an eye out for threats and emergencies, no doubt a remnant of our survival and wilderness days - which are only a few centuries behind us. The amygdala is triggered when we are stressed; the body goes into fight, flight or freeze mode. In time, we may find ourselves in a state of constant stress. This lowers our immune system, as physical energy is redirected to crisis management.
  • We all have individual joys, concerns and responsibilities (life!). This may be what we think about on a day-to-day basis, but the collective adds weight to our shoulders.
  • Health & Financial Worries. The pandemic put both of these under a huge stress-test, even at odds with each other. My blog has international readership; the experience will have varied for those in the USA or Europe vs India or Mexico. When it comes to individual health concerns, it's not just covid - there are so many things to think about. Reiki & meditation have been great stress-relief tools for me and with the World Peace Upgrade, I feel like it goes deeper even though it’s only been a few days.
  • Your mental chatter is a big one too. Stress relief tools & meditation are essential, so long as we include meditations to calm the mind and to process underlying emotions.
  • In terms of healing the rift, I'm a fan of combining conventional health care (or economic measures) with coping mechanisms and a bit of soul healing. As mentioned in my Self-Healing, Cancer & Love book, Reiki is one option but there are lots of things that we can do to bring a sense of peace into our lives. Here is an intro to meditation from a cancer survivor conference. And obviously, counseling is wonderful too!
  • The macro level is beyond our control - this is where a lot of stress and uncertainty come from. What matters is that we have coping tools, that we focus on what is in front of us, and that we lean on each other!
  • Let's Meditate Together (On Youtube🕊 Energy healing aims to address the points listed below.

  • War and Violence: This one is the toughest to address. As reiki practitioners, we learn to use the distance reiki symbol in the 2nd level. This is used to send Reiki to the root cause of a problem, or to send Reiki across time and space (sounds like science fiction!) When there is a natural disaster or a crisis, we send Reiki with then intention to alleviate suffering. Ideally we'd also send Reiki to people causing that pain, so that they stop acting out and hurting others. It’s always the damaged parts of human nature that create havoc. We send healing to underlying the causes and to any collective patterns or narratives.

Conflict has been around forever, but the ego/saboteur in all of us has to become exhausted and redirected in a functional direction. It feels hopeless when the conflict is at a distance, but I believe that we do have a bigger chance of healing our corners of the world because we are part of them.

  • It’s important to look at our own damaged parts - William Rand calls it the unhealed parts of our ego. What part of me feels anger, envy, jealousy or hurt? Are there voids that I try to fill with approval, status or competitive behavior? We can also send Reiki to people around us who cause pain, and to their dysfunctional patterns.
  • There is an element of Free Will when it comes to Distant Reiki. In healing school, we were taught to ask our intuition for permission before sending healing to someone else. We can also set the intention for it to flow to someone who needs it, if by chance, the intended recipient rejects it on a Soul or Higher Self level.
  • Grief & Emotional Pain: This one is tough too. How do we process feelings like grief, anger, anguish or even hatred and revenge? (We do live in that world). In 2019 I wrote a post called The Mechanics of Forgivenessan essential step on the road to peace, but curiously, not the most important one. Reiki is wonderful and I swear by it, but we need strong emotional skills from an early age. We may need counseling as well as a deep cultural shift. To quote my book, A Personal Guide to Self-Healing, Cancer & Love:

Use Reiki to Lift Your Mood (Authentically)

I taught an Usui Holy Fire ® Reiki class and something odd happened with the energy. It felt like Reiki was talking for me - I’m still trying to wrap my head around it 😅

Towards the end of the class I was talking about how I use Reiki in my daily life.  For example, we can jot down our goals and fill the paper with energy before brainstorming on how to bring those plans to life. Reiki opens the door to our intuitive faculties, tapping into the unlimited creativity that surrounds us, including the knowledge that your higher self has to share. It opens our eyes to new ways of doing things. Placing your hands on your Brow Chakra also opens up the mind.

I was talking about these practical uses when my palms started to buzz the way they do at the beginning of a Reiki session. The energy usually feels like electric tingles, before becoming hotter and hotter as I am ready to approach the client in the healing session. But in class, the heat never came, the tingles never left and instead, I clairvoyantly saw a white mist floating out from my palms into the room. Fifteen minutes later, it felt like I was looking at the students through the mist!

Then on Monday I gave a one-to-one Reiki class. The student was curious about using Reiki with personal triggers, psychology and emotional healing. I mentioned that Reiki and journaling go well together and how I use it in my own life - and funny enough, that white misty Reiki started to flow out from my palm chakras! It's like Reiki was talking for me LOL.

Back to the Mood Lifting Tip!

Journaling has always been one of my favorite activities since childhood, hence this blog 😇 Then in 2017 I signed up for a psychology class where we learned to write about the things that bother us as a way to release those feelings. As you write, you tend to gain a deeper understanding of how you really feel and why. Adding Reiki gives the session an extra oomph, as we direct healing energy at those feelings and let them evaporate gently. When you're done writing, place your hands on your Heart Chakra and fill your body with a sense of calm, peace and love (Reiki).

Reiki doesn't keep us from feeling our feelings, but it gives us a chance to understand them and hopefully feel just a fraction of what is there, as it makes its way out of our Aura. In some cases, for example trauma, it is best to see a therapist, but most of us will be able to give ourselves Reiki informally at home. Either way, Reiki is complementary to medical care, not alternative.

Many spiritual fads tell us to think positive, keep our vibes happy. I like to think of myself as a generally upbeat person, but I also spend a LOT of time thinking or writing (or drawing) about the sad, angry, and fearful feelings that make an appearance. And that is a big part of self-healing; otherwise the happy thought is no more than a bandaid. There is no reason to be afraid of our thoughts, but running away from an unhappy one can make it more resistant.

Reiki gives us an opportunity to deep dive into our feelings - letting the things that 'get us down' come to the surface in a gentle way. It serves to clear and heal the emotional body so that the things that aren't going perfectly well in our lives don't weigh us down so much. My spiritual psychology teacher likened each 'difficulty' of sorts to a glass that was full of water - every time we self heal, journal, or give ourselves Reiki, a bit of that water pours out.

Ready To Get Started?

We can only channel Reiki if we've been attuned by a teacher, and I would definitely recommend taking a Reiki Level 1 workshop. If the time is not right, there are other energy healing techniques that we can practice without attending a workshop. Both of my books guide us through the process. Chakra Healing & Magick includes creative techniques for chakra healing, intuition and a bit of crystal magick!

The energy healing exercises in the book can be done with Reiki or by following the steps in Chapter 5: Awaken Your Inner Healer. Available on Amazon below:

A Brief History of Reiki (And Sunshine!)

Reiki was discovered by Mikao Usui in the early 1920's. A lifelong buddhist, Usui believed that satori (enlightenment) could be reached through meditation, prayer and fasting. As legend has it, thus began the lonely climb up Japan's Mount Kurumaya. Usui resolved to meditate for 21 days and nights until he reached satori or died trying. Instead, Usui got Reiki.

In the west Reiki is known as a healing technique which can be used to clear, balance and heal the mind and the body. The word Reiki can be translated as Rei = divine intelligence, and Ki = life force energy. Reiki Healers channel this universal spiritual energy through their palm chakras to their clients facilitating the recipient's self-healing process.

Thanks to its Buddhist approach to personal development, Reiki has evolved into a spiritual path which has been embraced by thousands around the world. At the heart of the Reiki philosophy are the Five Core Principles:

Just for today, do not worry
Just for today, do not anger
Just for today, honor your parents, teachers and elders
Just for today, earn your living honestly
Just for today, show your gratitude to every living thing

These principles acknowledge the fact that all we have is the present moment and the choices it gives us. We can choose to be honest, respectful, grateful (and I would add, proactive) today. We can also become aware of the fearful thoughts that affect our wellbeing. Though planning for the future is a necessity, worrying does not help much. It can be hard to keep your cool in this pressure cooker we call life (we are human, after all) and the Reiki Philosophy can be very grounding, practical and gratifying. It teaches us to:

Do what you must today (with love and gratitude!) for today is all we really have!

On a personal level, I have always experienced Reiki as the brightest of lights, especially when I received my Reiki Master attunements, which enable us to teach it to others. This Reiki light was a godsend when I lived in foggy London, as I felt like I had a bit of Reiki sunshine to see me through the rain. Likewise we can channel that Reiki sunshine to bring light into our lives, especially if we need a booster.

My Reiki Healing Crisis - Ouch!

Last week I had my Reiki Master attunement, the third and final one. They always come with visions and flashes and this one was beautiful. I saw most of my spirit guides, angels and lots of beautiful colours mixing with shadows. The shadow part was a little uncomfortable but it was about learning to love those parts of yourself that you shy away from. It gave me the impression that I'd have to work on integrating parts of myself that I have been ignoring for a while. And it certainly did, though not in a very pleasant way. Now that I'm on the other side I can talk about the sucker punch that followed the Reiki attunement.

The attunement was last Friday, I had a wonderful couple of days and then BAM! On Tuesday afternoon I started feeling stabbing pains in my lower back. It turned out to be PMS gone haywire and though initially I was pleased not to get any cramps this month, by Wednesday morning I could hardly walk because my back hurt so much.  I turned to my Angel Therapy cards to ask what it was about and three times I got the same message: Be Willing to Forgive. I also remembered Louise Hay's interpretation of pain; how it is linked to guilt and self-punishment. So I thought OK, maybe I need to forgive myself (but for what?). Anyhooo, I live in a third floor walk up with no elevator. The thought of going out was not too appealing, so I had the whole day to think about it.

I spent most of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday cocooned in my flat, contemplating life. When I went back to the cards, out of boredom, I got one of two answers: The Sun (everything will be alright) and Be Willing to Forgive. So this is what I've been working on all week. Over the past three days I've realised that I tend to be very hard on myself and need to cut myself some slack. Be kinder and gentler with myself and less judgemental. I'm not sure where it comes from, but I think I'm harder on myself than I am on other people. That judgement turns to feelings of guilt, which turns to pain. I also got the sense that my body was mad because I hadn't fully embraced my feminine side (that's what I usually link PMS to in general - rejecting the natural feminine cycle and the strength, power and beauty that you can find in it).

It was also hard because the week has been absolutely beautiful and I wanted to be outside enjoying the sun. My intuition (or my angels) would respond with "chill out" and "don't rush back into things - you need to take a time out for yourself." And so I have.  The past couple weeks I've also received the intuitive message to cut back on sugar and coffee and when I looked up my PMS symptoms on WebMd - those two came up as the main culprits for horrible back pain and cramps haha. Next time I'll listen when body says ENOUGH! I also pulled an Archangel Michael card that said "You've created this situation, you can heal it" and that was an interesting one to get too. Anyhooo, I am going to see my doctor on Monday, though I feel much better now and think it was a post Reiki Healing Crisis.

This has been a good week for me overall. I spent a lot of time watching interviews on Youtube. You can learn a lot about people, art and how to follow your own path by listening to what others have done and experienced. Especially in the alternative and creative side which I am exploring now. Sometimes you can also glimpse intuition and soul purpose as the driving force behind someone's success, especially when they talk about going against the current and feeling compelled to do their own thing. That was reassuring. This healing crisis helped me find my bearings professionally and personally. Whenever I asked what was going on I got this feeling of calmness and the message to let go, not rush things and relax  =)

Reiki hugs,

Regina
