11 Ways to Bring More Joy into Your Life

There are Oracle Decks that I use for readings, and others that I turn to for inspiration and healing. Stewart Pearce’s beautiful Angels of Atlantis deck falls into the second category. The messages are inspired by Archangels like Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel - who I know from psychic school. Each card has a bright orb for us to meditate on, and broad themes involve feelings like joy, healing, peace, and abundance. I like to use these cards as meditative prompts and this Tuesday, they were also the source of inspiration for my radio show. I wasn’t sure what to talk about and I pulled a card for inspiration: Joy.

The result was a list of ten simple things that we can all do to bring more joy into our lives. Joy is said to be the purest and highest emotion, for some, even higher than the energy of love.

Here are eleven simple ways to bring joy into your life:

Spend Time with People you Love:  What else is there? The rest of the tips help us refocus the mind on happiness 🌻

Smile More Often.  When you smile, the world smiles back. The benefit is two-fold: being surrounded by friendly faces has been proven to affect our brain in a good way. And smiling often also fools our brain into thinking we are happy, releasing feel good chemicals that help us feel happy. Note: I’m not sure of the science behind this but based on personal experience, smiling makes me happy.

Get Some Exercise. Go for a jog, dance a little salsa or run up the stairs if that’s all you have time for. Working out is a great way to release stress. It also helps us feel better, releasing endorphins that make us happy. And to quote Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, “Happy people don’t kill their husbands”

Meditate. I started meditating on joy, peace and happiness after reading a book called The Essential Dalai Lama. Close your eyes for a minute, listen to your breath and picture gold or yellow light around you. I also like to call on Archangel Jophiel for help. Jophiel can help us change our outlook so that it is more optimistic. He’s one of my favorite angels and I feel his energy as yellow.

Count Your Blessings. Sometimes things go wrong and that’s all there is to it. But even when it feels like we are starring in a tragic-comedy, we can still cheer ourselves up by turning our attention to the things we have to be grateful for. Volunteering can make these blessings very obvious too. If you’re reading this online, someone in the world is getting by with less than what you or I have.

Let Things Slide. We all have our buttons and they get pushed. What bothers me may not bother you, and vice versa. The next time someone says or does something that rubs you the wrong way, consider giving them the benefit of the doubt. Look inward for any triggers that may need to be healed. That said, I wouldn’t discount the importance of self-respect, so drawing a line is important.

Switch Off Your Phone and sit in nature for a while. Or hangout with friends. Act like it’s the 80’s and your troubles and to-do-lists are not in your pocket.

Be Yourself. Living up to expectations doesn’t feel good, whether those expectations are real or self-imposed. Don’t apologize for who you are, what you do, or who you love. Be yourself and let the right people find you. You can heal your sense-of-self and shine bright by focusing on the Chakras, especially the Solar Plexus, and by grounding yourself in love (Read my book. Chakra Healing & Magick)

Put the Past Behind You.  Life is full of ups and downs as well as plenty of life stages that eventually come to an end. It can be tempting to look back to the past with nostalgia, especially if we have been through a difficult ending. But we can only find joy if we appreciate the present and embrace the future. Heal yourself to let go; it’s not about forgetting the past.

Be Willing to Forgive. It will give you peace of mind. It is said that holding a grudge is like letting someone live rent-free in your head. When we forgive we give ourselves a break, whether or not we also give second or third chances.

Enjoy the Moment. One of my favorite books is A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle. It tells us that when we are faced with a tough situation that can't be changed, we can make the conscious choice to tolerate it until it passes. The next best thing is to enjoy yourself, after all, even rough patches have good times. And when things are going great appreciate your good luck and en-joy yourself!

Constant Craving by Doreen Virtue (A Book Review)

On January 3rd, I started an informal Sugar Detox. It was going to last all month, but I cut it short after 21 days when this beautiful tempura ice cream landed on the table at Sunday Brunch. That's not bad, I'm proud of how far I have come. My goal was not about weight loss (if anything, I think my waistline resents all of the unsweetened peanut butter I had for dessert), but to be more aware of the sugar in processed foods. Mission accomplished! My sweet tooth has also been curbed, and that means a lot. The most dramatic change has been in how I take my cappuccinos, no sugar! And the fact that I'm mostly OK with fruit for dessert. It's also been three weeks since I munched on processed cereal bars. Instead I've had tons of veggies, more veggies and unsweetened peanut or macadamia butter. Yummy!

I also read a fantastic book by Doreen Virtue: Constant Craving. The food we eat fills our tummy but it often satisfies an emotional need. Especially when we tend to crave certain types of foods and not others. The ones I'm most drawn to paint an interesting picture of my personality. Here is what I discovered:

  • Spice up your life! If we're constantly craving hot sauce and spicy food, it might be excitement that we are after. Do I put hot sauce on everything because I'm bored, or because I'm from Mexico? Tough call. I might eat more spicy foods that most of my countrymen, and often I'll go looking for crunchy snacks just so that I can cover them with chilli powder. My favorite is cucumbers with lime and chili powder but potato chips work just as well.
  • Peanuts and Peanut Butter: This is about fun! Snickers and Reese's are my favorite chocolate bars. Barely any chocolate and lots of peanut. It also dawned on me that I am happy in jobs with a high fun factor. Other business school graduates look for high stakes positions and intellectual challenges. For me it's about fun. My favorite role was pribably sports and movie marketing at a cola company. Followed by product launches and advertising, which were both creative. I ended up leaving both of these jobs when the fun, creative side dried up. No fun, no joy.
  • Crunchy Snacks:  Stress buster! My jaw is often tense, and in her book Doreen tells us that crunchy snacks help us release that tension. The only thing that has made it go away for longer periods of time is acupuncture.
  • Salty Foods:  Another stress buster, if my memory is correct.

This book is a fantastic read for healers. I would recommend it to therapists as well, you can ask your clients a few  questions to get an idea of what they're looking for on a subconscious level. It was written for personal use, healing, and to analyze our cravings.

I give it Five Stars!

Self-Healing, Cancer and Love - Part 4

This is an excerpt from A Personal Guide to Self-Healing, Cancer and Love (Part I here). The book is an energy healing and meditation guide for families who are dealing with cancer.
Introduction

When I started writing this book my intent was to create an Energy Healing guide for cancer patients. The idea was to share my family’s experience – how it changed our lives and the perspective I have gained since then through my own healing journey. I also wanted to give others a chance to apply the techniques learned during a two-year healing course at the School of Intuition and Healing in London. Since then, this project has evolved into much more, no doubt thanks to my background in philosophy which means I enjoy asking questions. The first half of the book explores the question “Why do people get sick?” from biological and spiritual points of view. I cover a variety of factors ranging from diet, genetics and lifestyle to emotional and mental patterns that may hold back the healing process. I also believe that every difficult experience gives us valuable insights and lessons. Cancer is no exception. Some may feel regret over the direction they have taken with their lives and how much quality time they have spent with family and friends. The healing process involves accepting these feelings when they arise, learning from them and moving on.

The second half of the book explores Energy Healing as a complementary therapy to medical intervention. Energy Healing is a broad term that can be used to describe a variety of self-healing techniques including guided meditations, breathing exercises, journaling and hands-on healing such as Reiki. My theory is that Energy Healing addresses the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of disease while medical intervention treats the physical body. These two disciplines can work together. This book will give the a reader a basic understanding of the energy body, including the Aura and the Chakras, and how we can use a variety of self-healing techniques to release stress, tension and even old hurts and beliefs that may be undermining the healing process. Because these techniques also help manage mental and emotional stress, which can easily leave a person feeling drained, Energy Healing can be useful for the whole family.

My approach to Energy Healing hinges on the belief that our thoughts, emotions and reactions have an emotional charge. A positive experience can leave you feeling happy and energized. A negative experience does the opposite. For example, a severe disappointment can leave a person feeling angry, bewildered or hurt. Self-healing involves releasing these emotions from our consciousness and moving on. Some people find it easy to forgive. Others have trouble letting go, especially when there is a genuine grievance to overcome. Healing techniques facilitate the process, but ultimately it is the individual who lets go. Energy Healing can also help manage feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, anger and resentment. The last two can be especially toxic. I believe that with time, buried resentment and anger will eat away at a person from the inside, much like a tumor, and that for healing to occur on all four levels – mental, emotional, spiritual and physical – we need to connect with the energy of unconditional love and forgiveness. Hence the title of this book: Self-Healing, Cancer & Love.

Earlier I stated that Energy Healing is complementary to medical care. This is a legal requirement in some countries and I agree wholeheartedly for the following reasons:

1. Even if we could prove that anger and resentment are at the root of most cancer cases, it may still be easier to have surgery than it is to genuinely forgive.

2. I have not seen robust evidence to show that healing alone, or any complementary therapy by itself will prolong a cancer patient’s life. Individual case studies do not have the statistical significance to predict an outcome. Rather, that statistical confidence can only be found in randomized control trials, where large patient groups are administered one of several treatment options under medical supervision.

3. Though we would certainly like to, the role of the energy healer is not to save the client’s life. We are there to facilitate their self-healing process and their soul path. Energy Healing will not save a client from a learning experience that they are meant to have. In some cases, the illness may be necessary to trigger a change of consciousness before the patient moves on to the next stage in their life. For others, it may be their time to go and Energy Healing can help them find comfort and peace.

Energy Healing and meditation are complementary to medical care, not alternative. In instances where a family member or friend was diagnosed with cancer, the focus has been on supporting them through surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments.

Angelic Stress Relief Meditation

This is an excerpt from A Personal Guide to Self Healing, Cancer and Love. The book is for families who are coping with cancer, but the meditation can help anyone who is stressed.

Angelic Stress Relief Meditation

Sit down in a quiet place. Bring your attention to your breathing, observing its natural pace. Take a deep breath in, hold... and release. Repeat this process three times, holding your breath only as long as it feels comfortable.

Let your breathing go back to its normal rhythm.

Bring your attention to your Heart Chakra: the center of Unconditional Love. The Heart is also the seat of your intuition and natural healing ability. Breath gold healing light into your heart and release. Repeat this process at your own pace.
See and feel that loving energy overflow from your heart.

Now place your hands on your Solar Plexus, just below the sternum. On the next breath visualize green and gold light reaching your Solar Plexus. Visualize and feel the light clearing and balancing the energy in your Solar Plexus. The healing light fades and we are left with a bright yellow Chakra. It spins beautifully.

Hold that image in your mind and feel your Solar Plexus Chakra growing stronger.

Next we are going to release our worries by placing them in an Angel Box. By placing our fears and worries in this box we hand them over to the Angels.

Visualize a beautiful gold box in front of you. What does it look like? Does it have intricate designs on the side? Imagine how if feels to hold it. Let it come to life.

Visualize the box opening as you place all of your fearful thoughts, worries and concerns in its gold center. Put everything that has been weighing on your mind in that box, even the thoughts that you do not want to admit to yourself.

This box is a gift from Archangel Michael, who give us courage, and from Archangel Raphael, the healing angel. Imagine the box overflowing with gold and green angelic light. This light transmutes your thoughts and worries into positive energy.

When you open it, you now see gold rays emanating from the Angel Box.  Thank the angels for taking your worries and looking after you and your loved ones. Sit with this feeling of gratitude for as long as you like. Let it fill your entire being with warm, loving energy.

When you are ready, bring your attention back to your breath. Feel the weight of the chair under you and slowly bring your attention back to the room.

Take as much time as you need. When you are ready, open your eyes.

Namaste

Dealing with Unresolved Anger

Last year I was angry and hurt when something didn't go my way. I thought it was unfair and I didn't deal with it properly. A few months ago a tiny mole appeared on my back, near the heart. When I asked my intuition what it meant, the answer was "You're still angry. You feel you've been stabbed in the back." This made complete sense to me. One of the things I'm writing about in my book on Energy Healing & Cancer is how our emotions can leave a mark on the body, especially when we are not able to manage the emotional aftermath of a situation. I believe emotional and mental patterns can be linked to just about any any physical imbalance.

Louise Hay also discusses this theory in You Can Heal Your Life. Her view is that for every disease or symptom, there is a mental or emotional pattern that caused it. She links every disease to either anger or fear as the root cause. The classic example is stress leading to tension headaches, backaches and even ulcers. Stress is the way we experience fear of failure, for example failure to meet an important deadline or failure to pay our bills and rent. I believe a person's inability to release that fear from their  consciousness is what lead's to them feeling stressed. When the stress accumulates we start to see the negative effect on the body, be it a headache or hair loss.

The full range of human emotions can be held in the body, not just tension and stress. In my case I was angry and that little mole was an expression of the anger. It is also a visible sign telling me that I haven't dealt with the situation emotionally. Of course, I also made a trip to the doctor to have it looked at*. For whatever reason I was born with scores of moles. I have them checked out periodically as there are too many for me to keep track of. In old times people thought witches could be identified by their moles. I think they were onto something with me! I might have a mole for each past-life as a clairvoyant, healer or witch as I'm sure I had a few.

So back to my self-healing. There were two people involved in the situation last year. One moved away and I haven't seen her since. Though we were close I haven't felt like staying in touch or telling her about my new plans. The other person I forgave pretty quickly because I never really blamed them. I think I still need to deal with my emotions about what happened and release them. The past few days I've been sending Reiki to the memory.  With her I tried the other F word -> FORGETTING. Wrong approach. The only way to heal traces of anger is to FORGIVE.

In this case it was easy to forget because I didn't see her again. I don't know if my anger was even justified. Emotions are often irrational anyway. Anger is not a nice emotion to hold onto, even if you forget about it and bury it to get on with your life. Forgiving is about giving yourself a Get Out of Jail Free card. It doesn't affect the other person or condone their actions. Being mad at life is even more pointless than being mad at at person. If we're angry the best thing you can do is work through the feelings and let go. Otherwise the only person who gets hurt is the one in the mirror.

Energy Healing is complementary to medical care, not alternative. But it can help us understand what makes us tick under the surface. Try both approaches.

A Request for Help

So good news, I'm nearly done with my 1st book!!!! It is an energy healing guide for families that are dealing with cancer. Initially my thoughts were to write a lengthy post on the benefits of adding Energy Healing to medical care. Healing can help on so many levels: maintain personal energy, clear and heal mental and emotional blocks, stress relief, etc. It can also help the whole family by providing a healthy emotional outlet. All of this would be really useful, though it doesn't tell the whole story. I had also been thinking about why people get sick in the 1st place: physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

That took me down a different route. I have landed on a curious mix of science, intuition, healing and cultural beliefs. Beliefs are important as the placebo effect can be a very strong factor when it comes to medication. I'm still refining and rewriting the content  to make sure it's clear. Over the next few weeks I'd like to post a few excerpts that still need more work. It would be incredibly helpful to get feedback on what makes sense, what doesn't, etc. Look forward to any thoughts, comments or suggestions you may have  =)
