Teaching Reiki to Kids

This Saturday I taught a Reiki kids workshop where I tossed out the rulebook and focused on how I actually use Reiki in my daily life - which is more intuitive and creative than you might think 💕

For starters I began by asking the kids if they had seen the movie Frozen - the sequel is out this week and a lot of them had just been to the movies. I explained that Reiki is similar to the blue light that the princess shoots out of her hands, but that instead of freezing people, it fills them with love and happiness. We can also use that energy to feel better, to rest and to help others.

With that we jumped right into the Reiki placement - the part of the class that activates the energy so that they can channel it too. In Holy Fire® Reiki classes this is done with a meditation that lasts nearly 30 minutes - most of it in silence, pretty much imposible for kids. So I gave them printouts of the word Reiki in Japanese and suggested that as soon as they got bored, they start drawing it.

We had set up this pencil mandala in the center of the Reiki circle and within minutes they were reaching for their favourite colors 😅

With the activation done, now comes the fun part!

Channeling Reiki for the first time feels like something out of a sci-fi film. I had the kids hold up their hands, think of a color, and ask for Reiki. They imagined they had a balloon between their palms and they filled it with color. Their eyes went wide, talking about how it felt tingly, hot or cold. To some it felt like they had magnets in their palms - these sensations are mentioned by adults in Reiki classes too. Within minutes the kids were so excited, bringing their hands closer together, further apart, before we smashed the Reiki energy balloons and sent it into the room.

We went through several exercises - filling the room with Reiki to clear it. We filled our shoes with Reiki, the cupboards, the plants, and even filled the school's water fountain with Reiki. Then we moved onto Aura brushing, the idea was for the kids to brush each other's energy fields but they were still feeling shy and brushed their own instead. In Reiki Kids classes I find it is important to respect where they are and what they are comfortable with.

Giving Reiki To Yourself

After that we went through the hand positions and what each of them does - for example, healing the eyes helps us clear thoughts and worries. The back of the head lets go of second guessing and also sends Reiki down the spine. The Throat Chakra was their favorite, I think, because we give ourselves Reiki while sounding out DO-RE-MI-FA-SO-LA-TI! I mentioned this step clears our entire mind, body and emotions - without going into the details. The Throat is the center of the 13 Chakra System, including the energy centers above our heads in the Aura and below our feet.

This class didn't cover the Chakras as it was on Reiki & Emotions; when it came to the heart we put one hand over the left side of our chest and the other on the right for balance. Next we moved onto the upper stomach area and I asked them if they had ever felt butterflies in their tummy when they were scared or nervous (they all nodded). This is where we can heal some of our fears - though as one of the kids pointed out, those can be found in the mind too.

We continued down the front of the body before ending with our hands on our knees for grounding. Then we dusted ourselves off with Reiki, and created a HUGE Reiki ball to place over our entire bodies. Then came with a surprise - we set the intention to convert that Reiki ball to water so that other people's vibes slide off us. This is one of my favorite tools and as far as I can tell it is only possible with Holy Fire® Reiki, as that energy alternates between feeling like fire, colorful light or running like water. The Reiki meditations in the Master level involve lots of water.

Reiki & Emotions

Once the basics were over we took a much needed break before coming back to talk about our feelings and emotions. What type of situations might make us feel happy, sad, stressed or angry. For me one of the greatest benefits to Reiki is how it hugs our emotions. I asked the kids to think about a time they had been sad and to give the feeling a color. The color that came to mind representing their sadness was the one they would channel with their hands when they felt sad, letting Reiki flow through them and hug their sadness. It flows through and soothes us.

In my experience what happens (and I use this color technique with adults too) is we need to acknowledge our emotions. Just by giving our feelings the love and validation they need, we feel a bit better. Then Reiki energy flows through and releases some of it from our energy body, like water being poured out of a jug of water. We might not release all of the sadness, but it does weigh less. The space cleared is filled with Reiki so that we can continue healing ourselves 💖

Reiki is complementary to medical care, kids with anxiety and other conditions are always referred to a doctor.

Ready for the Kids to Arrive!

The kids loved the idea of Reiki flowing through their emotions so that they could feel their feelings without getting stuck. We also stressed that it is 100% normal to feel mad or sad, but that none of us wanted to stay mad for weeks afterwards. When it came time to talk about the Reiki Guidelines for Happiness - which in the adult version read "Just for today, I will not worry or anger" - for the kids, I choose to rephrase it as "When I feel angry or stressed, I give myself Reiki."

The 5 Reiki Ideals

The adult classes are deathly boring compared to the kids class, with more history into the Buddhist roots for Reiki, Usui's biography and what led him to create this amazing system for self-healing, meditation and personal growth. We also cover the ins-and-outs of energy healing.

With kids it is best to keep the Reiki class light, practical and playful. I always mention that Usui worked for the Japanese military and how he had been influenced by his family's apparent Samurai ancestry (this was included in the handouts from my Reiki 1 class years ago). We discussed the value of discipline and how Samurai were soldiers, but also spiritual - and that soldiers use their power and force to help their communities live and thrive peacefully.

Because of Usui's background, Reiki's philosophy is based partly on the Japanese military's discipline and guidelines for success (the ideals were taken from the Emperor Meiji). By following these simple guidelines, we would be able to make better use of Reiki in our daily lives. I took the liberty of adapting the traditional Reiki ideals to make them child friendly and relatable.

Just For Today
If I get mad, sad or worried I give myself Reiki
I give thanks for all my blessings
I do my homework, tell the truth
I am kind to others.

The original ideals talk about Happiness being the answer to our prayers, so to speak. The guidelines bring us closer to feeling happiness and contentment in our daily lives: Just for Today, I will not worry, I will not anger. I am grateful for all of my blessings. I do my work honestly and am kind to all living beings 💝

This group of kids reinforced my faith in humanity and proved that children are our hope for the future. When we came to the last Reiki ideal, I paused and said (in Spanish): soy buena onda con los demás, Mexican slang for "I am easy going and kind to others". The kids let out a collective sigh with HUGE smiles on their faces. They loved the thought of being nice to others, and how it would, in and of itself, bring more joy to their lives. They were also quick to point out that if we are kind to others, it comes right back to us =)

So that was beautiful!

We went on to do moving meditations - using power poses to activate happiness and confidence. The class ended after we had experimented with different Reiki uses, including:

  • Handcrafted Reiki Boxes so that the kids could fill the box with love and happiness, and with their intentions. We talked about Free Will and how some people might not want or need Reiki just then, and that was OK. The topic of a wish list came up - Reiki isn't a fairy godmother who gives us video games - it fills us with peace & contentment, and helps us heal feelings of frustration if we don't get that thing that we had been hoping for. We also talked about how things aren't always what they seem, and that sometimes when we have the toy, the appeal wears off (we called them smelly toys...)

  • Give Each Other Reiki: I asked a friend to join me and demonstrated a simple Reiki healing. In this instance I placed my hands on her head lightly and sent Reiki through her body. We ask for permission before touching anyone to respect boundaries, and also to be sure we don't make a bruised knee worse. Reiki can be felt even if we do not touch, as a matter of fact I am a huge fan of keeping my hands a few inches away...
...When the demo is over, there are usually just a few kids wanting to participate. Most hang back to see how they respond. The ones giving and receiving Reiki share their impressions with the group. With this particular style of Reiki it feels like a river flowing through the person receiving it. The reactions of the kids (or adults) giving and receiving Reiki for the first time are a mix of awe, wonder and visible surprise.

  • The Reiki Circle:  This is my favorite. We stand in a circle and pretend to join hands but don't do it. Your palm is 5 centimetres (2 inches) from the person next to you. We then send Reiki to the person on our right while receiving from the person on our left. It feels so nice and the pictures from this activity were just adorable.

  • Activate a Crystal: Amazonite stones have a beautiful combination of blues and green. It is great for healing fears and speaking the truth. I took a handful of stones with me and taught the kids to clear them with Reiki. The original Japanese clearing technique looks like a karate chop over the crystal, they loved that! We filled it with Reiki and asked the stone to help us by transmuting fears and releasing them to the universe.

Reiki has helped me more than I can put into words, but I didn't discover it until I was 32; what would my responses to life have been like if I had found it earlier? For me the greatest value has been in how it heals fears and hang-ups, tones down our stubbornness and releases beliefs. The adult classes are fun too but more structured; with children we can let our creativity roam free.

I will let you in on a little secret; though it was written for adults (or grown-up kids), some of the tools in Chakra Healing & Magick are meant to connect with our Inner Child. As I have mentioned earlier, our inner magician and our inner child are best buddies. We won't know what we are truly capable of until we reconnect with the joy and wonder that children bring to life.

Reiki Hugs,

Regina

Lighting Candles with Magick

The past few years I have been working with the elements of Fire, Earth, Air and Water to heal and balance my personal energy. This after I learned to read astrology charts four years ago and discovered I had virtually no Fire or Water in my chart. We need all four to function properly.

Each of these gives us a different quality or skill. Fire gives us confidence, ambition and creativity. Water is all about intuition, emotions and personal relationships. Air is about communication skills, thought processes, thinking skills and how we see things. Earth makes us practical, grounded and materialistic; it relates to spiritual and physical wealth and how we experience it.

Healing Tip! Lighting a candle activates all four if we do it consciously! Ground yourself first by sending your attention into the Earth and shield yourself with violet light 😉

When I mention that I have little Water in my natal chart, people are often surprised (2 of 10 planets and luminaries). My saving grace is Mercury in Pisces - the planet of the mind in a highly imaginative, intuitive and empathic Water sign. Nevertheless, I did have to put in a lot of work to connect with my emotions and intuition. It took a year of weekly intuition classes for me to get to the point where I felt relaxed. Now that I am teaching, I find most of my students are quicker to access their intuition. Having looked at some of their charts, astrology explains it.

Which brings me to the other Element that is underrepresented in my chart - Fire! Without Fire, our enjoyment levels go down and the motivation that keeps us going disappears. Fire gives us ambition, confidence and belief in ourselves. One of my tarot students put it perfectly, using exercise as a metaphor. We all know it is healthy to go to the gym or to work out. If you find a work-out that you love, time flies and before you know it an hour has gone by. With other workouts, we might give up after 10 or 15 minutes. This definitely rings true for me - spinning classes fly by and an hour is gone before I know it, but after 15 minutes on the elliptical I am bored silly.

The past few years I have gone out of my way to channel Fire and Water in Energy Healing sessions. The intention is for the archetypal energy to become part of me so that I can rely on it in my daily life. There are many ways to go about it. The easiest has been to call on the Archangels that govern the Element that we are missing - Michael for Fire, Gabriel for Water, Uriel for Earth and Raphael for Air. Another option is to meditate with the Moon as it travels through the Zodiac. I have been connecting with the Moon in Scorpio to dial-up both Fire and Water. Scorpio is a Water sign, but it is ruled by Mars, the planet of ambition, war and sports. People with lots of Scorpio energy tend to have tons of intuition, fire and power in their lives. It is pretty intense though and grounding and healing ourselves is incredibly important (true for any star sign).

Lastly, we can program crystals with lunar energy and take them with us. If you'd like to know more check out Chakra Healing & Magick as it lays the groundwork for this fun stuff - details below!

The Elements Are Magickal Too

Six months ago I signed up for a class where we learned to channel the purifying and healing qualities of archetypal fire. It is a Reiki class so the energy flows from your hands and it is so intense. I had always had strong sensations with energy healing but with this new Reiki, I sometimes feel like a character in a Marvel movie =)

Last week I tried to light a candle but it would barely take. Then the symbol that we use to activate Reiki Fire flashed through my mind and I intended for it to go to the candle. It lit up!!! I was so excited - it's the witchiest thing I have ever done. Then this week we were talking about the Elements in class, and when I mentioned Fire the students gasped and pointed at the candle in the room. I didn't see it, but apparently, the flame lit up when I mentioned Fire.

Meditations to Get You Started.

Below you'll find meditations to connect with the archangels of Fire & Water. If you'd like to know more, read Chakra Healing & Magick. The book focuses on energy healing, intuition and crystal magick. We explore the Elements and how they relate to physical, mental (mindset), emotional and spiritual healing, including crystal magick to balance our personal energy.

Working with the Elements has been life changing. I also love how they relate to Tarot - we can connect with the images on the cards to heal ourselves, as the four suits include Fire, Air, Earth & Water.

Healing with tarot symbolism is one of the themes in Chakra Healing & Magick - essentially how to heal yourself with crystals based on the cards that you are drawn to on a particular day.

The book is available worldwide, HERE.

I'm Reading Up on Witches ✨

I love Halloween and all things magical. While I have never thought of myself as a witch (after all, I am not Wiccan), the concept of magick is present in my daily life thanks to my experience with energy healing, clairvoyance and crystals. This got me wondering what, if anything, I might have in common with witches. I’m very curious about the craft, defined as art + structure + creativity. The word itself, witchcraft, had always made me feel uneasy.

So I decided to unpack this queasy feeling by reading one of Christopher Penczak's many books on witches. Penczak is the author of Buddha, Christ, Merlin: The Three Wisemen of our Time. In that book, he explores three qualities that we develop by practicing Buddhism, Christianity and Magick at the same time (intense): wisdom, love and power. Healthy use of magical power sits on a foundation of wisdom and love - and a personal connection with God or the Universe.

I am reading another book of his called The Inner Temple of Witchcraft. It looks at the spiritual side (not practical magic), which is what I am interested in. Below you will see a list of themes covered in Penczak's Inner Temple. Anything with a heart next to it was covered in depth at my energy healing and psychic schools in London. If there are two hearts, that theme was also included in my book, Chakra Healing & Magickfrom an energy healing perspective 💕

The goal is to demystify witchcraft for myself and for anyone who might be interested in understanding witches. I should mention that I loved the Inner Temple of Witchcraft and am going through some of the exercises now, as they add plenty of depth to our intuition 💛

Some of the themes in The Inner Temple of Witchcraft:
  • What is a witch? A healer, psychic, magician or shaman ...
  • History of witches, persecution and the craft of the witch.
  • A witch's connection with Earthly and planetary cycles.
  • Accessing the higher mind, conscious mind and psychic mind.
  • An introduction to quantum physics and why magic works.
  • Experiments that indicate the existence of holographic memory.
  • Ethics and why it's important to align with Divine Will; using magick or healing to help others, harm none, and set our ego aside 💛
  • See and feel yourself as the entire universe to make magick 💛
  • How to feel energy between the palms of your hands 💕
  • How to feel energy in the Aura 💕
  • How to move energy with a specific intention 💕
  • How to enter a relaxed meditative state 💕
  • The power of visualization in and around us 💛
  • The Hermetic Principles and the Kybalion
  • The microcosm and the macrocosm 💛
  • How to awaken your psychic sensitivity 💕
  • How to connect with earth energy through trees. 💕
  • How to use a pentagram to send healing to someone else.
  • How to work with light and color to clear your Aura 💕
  • Shielding your Aura with light, intention and crystals 💕
  • How to open, close, clear or heal the Chakras 💕
  • Astral travel and psychic journeys to other locations 💛
  • Muscle testing, pendulums and other types of 'divination' 💛
  • Automatic writing and how to connect with guides 💕
  • How to look inside an object and read its energy 💛
  • Past lives, energy healing and other fun stuff 💛
  • How to program a mudra to activate your magical abilities on command - for the highest good of all and harming none. This is truly amazzzzing!
  • Introduction to the various planes of reality / dimensions 💛

The majority of themes in The Inner Temple of Witchcraft have a heart next to them, indicating massive overlap with energy healing. Penczak describes this as a foundation book for aspiring witches - giving them energy tools to cast spells later on. He also discusses the importance of setting our ego aside and asking that magic only take shape if the results are beneficial for everyone involved. Even with energy healing and intuition one needs to watch out for karma.

I flipped through his Outer Temple book (2nd degree for witches) afterwards to see what that was about; I discovered that real-life witches create potions and cast spells. Contrary to popular belief, most witches cast spells to help and heal themselves or others. The Outer Temple of Witchcraft book is fantastic if you would like to follow up with an advanced class but it isn't something that I am likely to pursue because I am not looking for a religion just now - though Wicca does look awesome if you're into healing, magic and mysticism. Also, I have never been into cooking, ingredients or following recipes and there seems to be a lot of that on the witch's path.

A long time ago, I was accused of witchcraft (details here). It was funny despite the fact that it happened at work. At the time, I had no idea what witches actually did. But now, if a real-life witch were to call me a witch, I would take it as an enormous compliment.

Happy Halloween!

Healing the Soul and Spirit

I have been practicing energy healing since 2010 and it has helped me tremendously. The main benefits have been stress relief as we clear the Aura and release thoughts, beliefs, regrets and experiences that weigh us down. It wasn't until seven months ago that I signed up for a Holy Fire® Reiki class that I started to feel like a kite that was grounded on planet earth, and somehow flying higher and higher at the same time. I’ve come to value its impact on my personal growth more than anything else; how Usui Holy Fire® Reiki brings us into direct contact with our Spirit so that we can see where it takes us 🚀🚀🚀

If you’re new to my blog, Reiki is a self-healing technique with Japanese roots. Rei translates as universal energy, divine love and intelligence. Ki refers to the energy in our bodies and how our energy levels are on a daily basis. We can meditate with Reiki energy to activate our inner guidance.

Your Soul & Spirit

Rather than focus on the physical body, let's take a step back and think about the mind, the soul and the spirit. When we meditate with Holy Fire® Reiki we receive a boost on all of those levels. In my experience, this is what mystical experiences are about. The spiritual boost is where I have found the greatest benefits to practicing Reiki and meditation in my daily life.

Developed by William Lee Rand, the Usui Holy Fire ® Reiki curriculum defines the Soul as the part of ourselves that has lived many lives. Some of those lives have been easier than others. In every life we tend to have have happiness, love and positive growth experiences, but also difficulties and sometimes traumatic events. We might not be aware of our Soul, but if you visualize it like a large cloud, it might be white, fluffy and breezy. Or dark, rainy and heavy. One of the purposes of self-healing is to clear the soul so that it can fly.

Then far above that is our Spirit, all it does is grow. Your spirit is pure light, it is also the part of us that has mystical experiences. The happier and healthier the Soul and personality, the more your Spirit is able to soar. In the Holy Fire® Reiki class we learned that the Spirit has infinite growth potential because it is the part of us that is one with the Universe, and that taps into God's love, wisdom and power directly. In a recent Reiki meditation I heard a whisper referring to my Spirit as my Infinite Self because of its endless potential for personal growth, love and happiness.

That is me flying in the picture!

Usui Holy Fire® Reiki Classes

The Usui Holy Fire® Reiki Level 1 and 2 classes instill Reiki in the Soul, where it trickles down to our mind and body. The Reiki Master class sends it all the way to your Spirit. I'd been practicing other types of Reiki for seven years (Usui and Usui Tibetan, which I loved), but I didn't feel the turbo-boost until this Holy Fire® Reiki class. In my case, it has gone to my spirit and personality.

The difference is how the student receives Reiki. In traditional Reiki classes it is through the teacher, and in Holy Fire® it comes down directly from above. Both are brilliant and underneath it all, I believe that we each are guided to the class that will help us at that stage in our lives. Usui, Usui-Tibetan, Holy Fire® and Karuna Reiki® have helped me tremendously on so many levels.

Do It Yourself

There are plenty of ways to access that part of your self. If you would like to know more, by all means sign up for a Reiki class. And have a look at my books on personal growth and spiritual development! The healing techniques can be carried out with a Reiki 1 class or by following the steps in the energy healing chapters. My 1st Psychic Development Class - 10 Years Ago!

In January of 2010, I signed up for my first clairvoyance workshop. Feeling curious but skeptical - would I be able to do any of the activities in the class description???

That skepticism disappeared by lunchtime when we finished the first exercise. The teacher put us in pairs and guided us through a meditation where we each visited the place where the other student lived.

We began by activating our Aura, and through it, our intuitionThe teacher then asked a series of questions: do they live in a city, what do you see in the street, how far from the neighbors, what color is the building, do you walk right through the front door into their home or is it a journey? The questions continued - how many bedrooms, how are they decorated, what is in the fridge, what is the view like? How many people live there? Do they have pets? What type of music do they listen to, etc.

When we came out of the meditation, the teacher told us to describe what we'd seen and the person would say YES to anything that was accurate. I went first and maybe a 1/3rd of the things I saw turned out to be right. The funny thing is I saw flashes of places I had been in real life - not the classmate's place specifically - but when I described my aunt's back yard and the view from her kitchen window, it matched his. I was able to say how many bedrooms they had, how the guest room was decorated, colors of the couch and where they had the violin (his wife, the teacher that day, was a musician though she hadn't told us what instrument she played).

I was happy with what I saw but chalked a lot of it up to chance. Then my classmate started to describe the place where I lived. He was the teacher's husband and had been going to her workshops for years - everything he described was accurate. It blew me away. I had just moved to London, moved into a flat in a huge building with more than 900 apartments. He described the number of entrances to the building, how many stairs. Where the concierge was, and roughly how many doors I had to walk by to get to my place (more than 28). He told me what the neighbors cooked, which smells made it into the hallway and which ones annoyed me.

When he described the apartment itself, he saw a one-bedroom apartment with no paintings on the wall. He told me what color the towels were in the bathroom, the color of the duvet on my bed and that I had a humongous closet - only a 1/3 full of clothes. He saw accurately that I didn't cook and had never turned on the oven (I didn't use it once the year that I lived there). The apartment was still bare as I had only been living in London a few months and it was a furnished flat with few decorations of my own. I was floored by his description; he didn't say anything that wasn't true.

When this was over our teacher had us come back to the circle and list three things that we perceived accurately. I was relieved to name ten; she laughed because I was describing her house. Every student in the class was able to name five or more things, and she told us it was because we had begun the day with an hour-long energy meditation to quiet the mind and relax into our energy fields. The rest of the weekend was crazy; we went through dozens of exercises to work with clairvoyance but also the senses of touch, taste, feeling, hearing and just knowing.

The teacher was visiting from Helsinki and I never saw her again, but I’ve followed her advice down to the letter. First - trust what comes to you intuitively and describe exactly what you see or feel. If we interpret what we see without describing it, we risk missing the mark and the person might have recognized that image. Second - we can all go on an 8-hour workshop and do amazing things. But if we want to access our intuition regularly, meditation has to become a daily practice. Our intuition speaks through the Aura and Chakras; we need to build those muscles slowly. I was so tired after this first class that I could barely make it to work for a week.

Always ground, clear and shield your personal energy before connecting with Divine Light to make sure that any messages come from Source - whether we call it God, the Universe or Love. My psychic school was in central London and I loved that the diversity of the students kept the vocabulary from following any one religion. We all connect with the same light to activate our sixth sense. It didn't matter if you were Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, atheist or a lapsed Catholic like myself. It was not about belief (other than in yourself) - because the proof was in the pudding. The visual was accurate or it wasn't; with time we would get better at clearing our energy and receiving visual messages. We also explored other clairs, not just clairvoyance.

Later that year I signed up for weekly psychic development classes, and I started this blog in September 2010. These tools have taken energy healing to another level.
