An Unexpected Happiness Boost

One of the things that I’ve toyed with is going vegetarian to reduce my environmental footprint, but rational arguments aren't always strong enough for us to give up something we love. And my favourite foods are veggies, salads, steaks and cheeseburgers. The compassion plea might be stronger.  If we think about how animals are kept in factories, it is worth it to choose free-range beef and chicken. Let's say the animal had a humane life and we believe in the food chain (animals eat each other in the wild); there is nothing morally wrong with eating animals. Moderation is healthy too.

Then three months ago I went on a heart healing workshop where we connected with our Higher Selves and with teacher guides such as Buddha or Quan Yin. It sounds like science fiction, but we can all learn to receive their messages and guidance if we meditate with this in mind. Beyond a certain level, the messages that come through are meant to help us and these highest level guides never ask for anything in return. My Reiki Teacher calls it the Third Heaven level where all we encounter is compassion; no duality, no give and take, no agendas. The messages are about helping you.

The message that I received from a spiritual being that shone like a thousand suns, was that going vegetarian would make me happier, as I wouldn't be eating certain emotions. It made me think about it…

I'm Testing Vegetarian Waters

This was in March. Two weeks ago I finally thought I would go cold turkey for a month. I love meat - I really do - so in the long term my plan is to become a weekday vegetarian and eat burgers and hot wings on weekends. Tacos too - it's really hard to be Mexican and live in Mexico and never eat a taco again (although my favourite taqueria has a vegetarian menu). I went to a nutritionist to get tips on how to substitute protein, iron, B12 and all of the others nutrients that we get from meat. Two weeks have gone by. I had a spoonful of ceviche the first week, and chicken enchiladas on Wednesday, but otherwise no meat products.

And guess what? I have never been happier. It took like 10 days for my mood to adjust and another few for me to notice. But I feel like my Aura is full of light, my mind is clearer and my Solar Plexus Chakra is radiating. Nothing has changed in my life - actually, there are a few things that make it less than perfect. But I am happy for no reason, except for the biological one ...

Science On Vegetarian Happiness

Yesterday I was thinking about how I feel so much happier and was there a scientific reason for it? I googled "happy after 2 weeks as a vegetarian" and came across a clinical study that looks at the acids in animal meat and the effect they have on the brain. This particular acid is called Arachidonic - our body needs it to function properly, but if we have too much, the studies show a correlation between depression and animal consumption. The trials run with meat eaters showed that after just 2 weeks on a vegetarian diet, people who previously ate meat were happier.

So I had no idea about this before I started - other than my intuition telling me that I would be happier as a vegetarian. The archangels have told me repeatedly that our personal ability to channel miracles into the world depends on how happy we are - but also, that if we are super unhappy they can help us with a bit of divine intervention. Thank God for that, literally.

I would never presume to tell anyone to become vegetarian. But if we can't bring ourselves do it for environmental reasons or out of compassion (I couldn't manage it despite those reasons), test it for your own happiness. Just for two weeks to see how you feel, and if you are happier, think about adding a few meat-eating days so that you are able to benefit from the mental uplift as well as your favourite dishes. At this point I don't know if I will stick with it forever but I am loving the happiness boost. When this month is over I might choose the weekday vegetarian plan as that gives us freedom to eat anything on Saturdays and Sundays - then again I may run with it and go vegetarian 99% of the time. The main benefit is happiness; for me, for the animals and the planet.

Vegetable Protein Sources

Knowing what to eat is the biggest challenge and to be honest, I didn't stock up on protein alternatives so by the end of the first week I was feeling tired. Plus my favorite workout is spinning á la SoulCycle, so I had to up my protein game. I have been relying on a few ingredients and I'm actively looking for more. The tiredness went away with these:

  • Fage Greek Yogurts have 20 grams of protein in one pot, which is almost half of what I need in a day (at 63Kilos) - amazing.
  • Feta, Goats Cheese, unsweetened peanut butter are good too.
  • Pastas made from Lentil, Garbanzo have 8-10 grams.
  • The Veggie Protein Shakes at GNC are great.
  • Lots and lots of greens like Spinach etc
  • Lentils, beans, garbanzos, nuts and seeds.
  • Quinoa is a famous protein grain but I am really loving another one called Freekeh that is very filling and has lots of protein.
  • Eggs for breakfast are wonderful.

My nutritionist suggested switching my carb intake to bread, rice and pasta that take longer to digest. Some carbs give us more energy - and I have to include the right type of carbs, protein and fat in every single meal or snack. The only thing that's been cut are pastries, candy and sweets (or fruit after 2pm as it disrupts digestion). The bread that I am eating is called Ezequiel or Centeno in Spanish; the rice is usually wild or a bit harder, no white or processed carbs for me.

The Bigger Picture

We get a lot of nutrients from meat, chicken and fish - not just protein. Iron, B12 and other minerals need to be substituted as well. I am no expert on this - clearly I’m just starting out. But the past weeks have seen such a HUGE SHIFT IN MY HAPPINESS that I anticipate being mostly vegetarian for a long time. How many of us would love to feel a little bit happier. If a plant-based diet does it for you, going vegetarian is a pleasure, not a sacrifice.

There are plenty of rational reasons to not eat meat and you will find them in this 4 Minute TedTalk on being a Weekday Vegetarian. But we humans aren't entirely rational - so many of our decisions are made emotionally. So do it for yourself - for your happiness, and if you feel a difference it will be very easy 😇

I hope you enjoyed this post and please don't unsubscribe - we will go back to energy healing and intuition posts next week. And if you'd like to give this a go - see a nutritionist. The last thing you need is to miss out on nutrients and think that being a part-time vegetarian is exhausting, when it just requires planning and knowledge. And of course, every physical body is different, please pay attention to what you need.

One last plus to going vegetarian, you usually have room for dessert!

Imagination, Healing and Shadowscapes Tarot

The past year I have been teaching a mix of energy healing and psychic tarot in Mexico; this project wound up being a much bigger adventure than I ever imagined. There are many layers to tarot including astrology, numerology, introspection and intuition.

I went through most of these themes independently in my student days so it has always been easy for me to see the symbolism in tarot cards. On some level, I feel like my intuition brought me back to tarot when I was ready to use the cards a learning and energy healing tool.

Tarot Has So Much To Say!

Along the way I have picked up a few decks as each creator has his or her take on the concepts for the 78 cards. Tarot is a visual tool and we learn a lot by looking at different illustrations; the look that resonates also depends on how we feel that day. My latest find is Shadowscapes Tarot by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. It is full of fairies and nature spirits, not the least bit scary, but still accurate when it comes to conveying the meaning in the cards. Especially the sad ones, which are necessary for healing.

For example, the Tower shows a tall structure about to crumble on top of a village, destabilizing town life. And the Devil depicts a person caught in the prison of his mind and fears. But this deck doesn't drive people away - not that there is anything wrong with Rider Waite decks (I love those too). For some of us, gentle images are easier to digest until we understand the meaning of the superficially dark cards and can put them into context. Shadowscapes Tarot is fantastic for newbies and seasoned readers alike as it doesn't shy away from the deeper meanings.

Once we have gotten to know the cards and why difficult images are in the tarot, we can use those images to connect with our Shadow - a part of ourselves that needs to be embraced though often, we are reluctant to even look at it. The qualities that we would very much like to sweep under the rug stare back at us, and as we can be afraid of seeing them, the 'unhelpful' reaction is to panic and put the cards away, sometimes forever.

Healing Yourself With Tarot

If instead we view our emotional reactions as a sign that we still need to heal, this is where the magic happens. Not in the Harry Potter sense of the word, but in the transform your life and kick ass way. Shadowscapes Tarot is lovely because it lays the shadow out for us in a way that isn’t confrontational, giving us a chance to feel and heal that discomfort.

I like to heal my reaction to disconcerting cards by holding one in my hands and filling it with Energy Healing: picturing violet light as it flows through my mind, body and Aura, integrating whatever is in the card that I didn't want to look at. We don't have to force anything, just let that energy flow. Violet light is a mix of Peace (Blue) and Compassion (Pink). We can all practice Energy Healing - more on that below 😉

Another approach can be to visualize yourself in the cards that you pulled and ask your intuition to guide you through a healing meditation where you see yourself living those scenes, and coming across victorious. This is energy healing + imagining, so we can repeat the process as often as we'd like. If we get stuck, we can use automatic writing and journaling to explore the reasons why. Tarot was designed to help us tease out our intuition and subconscious.

Manifesting Miracles With Music

Last year I gave a tarot reading where manifesting desires came up; specifically, how easy it was for the client's family to score tickets and freebies to see their favourite bands playing. When it came to other wants, like a business taking of, the process was much slower. The complexity of a business is just bigger, but why was it that anything musical took off quickly?

Why are some things easier to manifest?

The message that came through was about the bliss we feel when we are at a concert, or even listening to music that we love. It is not a stepping stone to anything else, you just want to enjoy the moment. It is not a fancy purse or a car that will do X, Y or Z for you. Not that there is anything wrong with wanting a beautiful bag or a piece of jewellery that we genuinely love ;-)

If we want to manifest other things with the same level of ease, we have to connect with the end goal and not the vehicle that may get us there. We can manifest our Heart's desires quicker than the Ego's wants because the Ego wants security and focuses on things that appear to offer security, whereas the Heart will sense joy and taps into it naturally.

Allowing vs Forcing Manifestations

A few months ago I signed up for my friend Camila’s spiritual psychology class. We looked at manifesting and resonance, as well as psychology. Cami explained that the Universe responds to how we feel about situations. When we see something and think "oh I like that!" the Universe takes note. The more often we respond with appreciation, the clearer our signal. Every time we respond positively to an idea, we tell the Universe to bring it closer to us. Until poof!!! It comes about in the best way. I've had a few gifts come along this way…

To recap, the key is to respond with a joyful "I love that!" when we come across anything that we'd like to have in our lives. Whether it is a new purse, a new relationship, a promotion at work, a solid group of friends or even a house on a specific street. This is how I found my apartment in Notting Hill years ago - felt it in my Heart Chakra and I wound up on the most beautiful street.

Why Envy Has The Opposite Effect

If instead, we respond with envy to the world around us, that unhappy and slightly bitter feeling sends mixed signals to the Universe. The Universe isn't a psychologist who thinks "she responds with irritation but deep down, wants it, so I'll give it to her anyway." Instead, the Universe registers envy as an unhappy feeling that arises in response to X, Y or Z. To help us, it pushes the object away from us so that we can be at peace. Not helpful at all is it???

There is a great book by Karla McLaren called The Language of our Emotions: What Your Feelings are Trying to Tell You. She doesn't go so far as to link emotions with manifesting, but it her approach to emotions is wonderful. Envy is a tricky one because it shows us what we think we can't have (hence the envious response). It also repels the object of our desires. The Universe can move us into a position where we can satisfy our needs and wants for growth, love and abundance - but we have to give it time and space to do so, on its terms.

The trick is to heal the source of envy, knowing that we too can shine; all the while feeling joy for others. The more we celebrate others, the better off we are.

Some Musical Inspiration!

My book, Chakra Healing & Magick, looks at healing tools designed to manifest a life of love, joy and power. Whenever I sit down to visualize an intended future I will listen to my favorite songs to feel that joy, asking for This or Something Better for my Highest Good, a manifesting phrase from Camila's class. We can also sing; the intention is for your voice to send that vibe out to the world.

With this in mind, here is a link to one of my favourite songs by Coldplay. This one also brings in a bit of color vibrations for the Solar Plexus Chakra, the chakra for joy and personal power =)

One Last Healing Tip!

There are many ways to heal ourselves. I find that the changes we seek come about quicker when we combine energy healing with music. Listen to songs that match your current mood - whatever needs healing. Don't shy away from the sadder vibes, and when you have sat with those emotions for a while, bring the playlist back to something a little more balanced or upbeat. We can all learn to channel energy healing, my books will get you started. Chakra Healing & Magick includes the creative healing tools that I use every day.

The secret ingredient: live recordings amplify the effect with the audience's energy. If you speak Spanish, another favorite! Tap into that sense of joy.

Follow the links below for Chakra Healing & Magick! The book goes through the basics of energy healing and intuition, aiming to empower our lives by releasing doubt and limiting beliefs.
