Is everything going online?

Today was another first! I moved into my new flat a month ago and am just about done transferring the utility bills to my name. Today I logged onto EDF Energy to ask about my electric bill as I still hadn't heard from them. I was planning on calling them up to ask. Calling companies to ask about accounts isn't at the top of my enjoyment list. You have to wait in line whilst listening to the same songs over and over, etc.

As it turns out, I didn't have to call them. There was a little chat icon on their Contact Us page inviting me to chat live with an advisor. How weird! This didn't exist three years ago when I moved into my previous flat. I chatted with a nice person named Simon. He took my details, my meter reading and set up my account. Without actually speaking with someone. I wouldn't say it was impersonal because there was a person on the other end of the line (I hope). But still, new to me. Have you had an online chat with your phone company? It felt like an oddly natural evolution ...
