What is Energy Healing?

Energy Healing is a complementary therapy that promotes mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, as well as relief from stress-related health concerns.

Energy Healers channel a mix of Universal and Earth energies, through their Heart and Palm Chakras to the client’s body and energy field. This helps them release stuck energy, emotions and anxiety that they may have picked up from everyday interactions. So for example, let’s say you’ve had an argument where you found yourself exasperatingly tongue-tied. Not having the words to express yourself can leave a sense of frustration and even constriction in your throat. I’ve certainly been there a few times! Or maybe, you felt a pang in your stomach, where we tend to hold our personal power and boundaries. If this happens often, the energy builds and we may see chronic sore throats or even tummy aches. Energy Healing aims to clear this energy from the body and the energy field.

There’s a fantastic book by Inna Segal, called The Secret Language of your Body, that sheds light on the meaning behind specific symptoms and organs. Similar to Louise Hay's work in You Can Heal Your Life, though Segal goes into the meanings in more detail. I use this knowledge, combined with my intuition and the channeled energy, to work my way through a healing session, whether it’s with a client. Or just healing myself – which is also wonderful!

It's worth mentioning that Energy Healing is complementary to medical care, not alternative. I like to think that healing addresses the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of disease, while conventional medicine takes care of the physical urgency. This is especially important when it comes to serious conditions like cancer, diabetes and certain mental health issues. While some people have strong affinities for either natural/alternative medicine, or conventional,     I like to get the best of both worlds.

What happens during a session?

We have the Healer, channeling energy, and a client receiving it. The client usually sits or lies down, fully clothed. I usually start by placing my hands on the client’s shoulders to connect with them, before working my way through the Chakras and the Aura.

Focusing on the Aura and Chakra System enables us to focus on specific areas of our life; for example: Root Chakra to strengthen our foundations, Sacral Chakra to stimulate our appetite for life, Solar Plexus to work on our confidence and personal power, Heart Chakra to enhance our experience of love, Throat Chakra to strengthen our voice, Brow Chakra for our vision and analytical skills, and finally Crown Chakra to boost our intuition and spiritual connection. We can also clear and balance the different Aura layers, before ending the session by grounding the client.

I'll do this by putting my hands on their feet and intending for excess energy to go into the earth. This clears the mental and emotional bodies again.

It's common for clients to report feeling relaxed afterwards. During the session, you may feel temperature changes, tingly sensation or electricity. Everyone is different. Some people feel nothing, and that’s OK. I tend to feel the energy strongly when I give healing. Not so much when I receive it.
People often ask if they need to believe in healing for it to work. In my experience, they just need to be open to receiving it. It’s OK to be skeptical, especially at first. Some of my case studies in Healing School were colleagues who had never had healing and were curious and a little bit skeptical. The best way to understand how it works is to go for a session and try it out. You might be surprised!

A little bit on Self-Healing

Before we take our first caller, I'd like to talk a bit about self-healing. Seeing a professional Healer can give us a big boost and a sense of direction, but nothing beats learning to heal yourself. Even when we do see a healer, we only release the baggage that we’re ready to let go of. It’s a great idea to take an active role in your healing process. There are plenty of self-healing techniques to choose from, including Reiki, meditation and breathe work.

Tune in next week to learn more! If you'd interested in self-healing, I would also suggest you look up my book: A Personal Guide to Self-Healing, Cancer and Love. Though the theory is tailored to families who are coping with cancer, the techniques can be applied by anyone.
