Shine a Light on Your Life with Tarot

It has been eleven years since I acquired my first deck: The Mythic Tarot by Juliet Sharman Burke. I loved that it was based on Greek myths and that it felt like a magical work of art. Tarot in general can be seen as 78 paintings that tell a story. This one in particular told the story of Greek gods, goddesses and the humans that crossed paths with them. Each of the 22 cards in the Major Arcana depict a greek deity, or a virtue. If we take a step back to think about ancient mythology, we see characters with traits that can be described as human and divine.

My feeling is that greek myths encouraged us to grow and achieve our full potential, without losing sight of human nature and the chaos that an unhealed egos bring about. To loosely paraphrase my Karuna Reiki® teacher, a happy and healthy ego fills us with strength and purpose - it's a vehicle for our light to shine. An unbalanced ego undermines our lives. Healing the Solar Plexus Chakra is vital because that is often where inner struggles lie. There are many ways to go about it.

Why try Energy Healing with Tarot?

At first I was drawn to the artwork and the card meanings, but eventually I realised that tarot cards are a great tool for personal growth and knowledge. Most tarot decks are based on the Rider Waite deck from the early 1900's, with personality traits and skills depicted in the suits of Fire, Earth, Air and Water; and 22 Archetype cards representing major growth phases in life.

We see ourselves reflected in the cards and this makes it easy for us to understand the subconscious choices we make. It is like watching a movie and seeing yourself, and others, in the characters.

Tarot cards shed a light on what needs healing and integrating. The secret is to choose a deck you resonate with thematically and visually. You'll find some of my favorites on Instagram HERE 💕

Taschen's Salvador Dali Tarot

The Salvador Dali Tarot deck is a must have for art and tarot fans. Each card literally is a painting and the book is beautiful (I'm not including an affiliate link, but I linked to the manufacturer)

Tapping Into the Unconscious

I like to ask for clarity on my current circumstances by accessing my intuition through the cards. Each of the images has been designed to convey a theme, a challenge or an emotion. When we see the cards on the table, the ones that evoke the strongest emotional reactions are the ones with a message for us. It helps to sit with the cards we dislike and journal about our feelings. Seeing the characters and what they go through can also help us describe what we feel & experience in our lives.

With that done we can then come back to the ones that feel better to get a complete view of the reading.
We can use tarot to ask about the future, and this has worked for me on many occasions. However I feel that the real value is in letting the cards open our eyes to all of the stumbling blocks that we have put in our way; then we can heal or release it. The cards can also signify people that we meet, and how we interact.

This approach helps us move forward, for example by telling us that we are acting out of fear, or stuck in the past. The awareness is empowering if we make inner changes. In terms of my influences - in college, we used film analysis to view ethical problems with nuance and distance. This was one of the classes that made me decide to major in philosophy. It had creativity and purpose. I approach tarot similarly, as a mirror for my life. Please note: I am a philosophy major and energy healer, not a psychologist.

The Magic is in Your Aura

Let’s visualize the Aura as a sphere of light around the physical body. It is a psychic muscle that both stores and transmits information. At the School of Intuition & Healing we learned to divide it into four thick layers for simplicity's sake (it has about 12). One of these layers registers physical sensations while the next two register emotions and thoughts from our surroundings. The last layer makes it possible for us to feel the presence of angels and spiritual energy.

When we activate our Aura to read the cards, the information that is stored in the Aura's many layers comes to the surface so that we can integrate it consciously. We see themes reflected in the cards; the images that stand out have the most relevant message. The cards help us process what we feel, and what happens - but this is not a replacement for psychological counseling. If you are in a difficult situation, a counselor will be well equipped to help you navigate that.
I like to look at the cards for deeper understanding. They also help me find an outlet for my emotions.

Let's Get Ready

Before doing any psychic work, we set the intention to connect with Divine Light so that we can tune into the messages that help us grow with compassion. You’ll find the steps in my book, Chakra Healing & Magick.

Here is a Tip! 💜 Always ground and clear your Aura before shuffling the cards as this releases superficial worries, giving us a chance to go deeper in energy healing sessions.

Grounding, clearing and shielding is covered in Chapter 1 of Chakra Healing & Magick. Energy healing is covered later, along with creative tools. Just keep your tarot cards nearby and set the intention for them to be cleared as well, before shuffling through your deck and choosing one as a journaling prompt. You will find plenty of imaginative ways to connect with your intuition in the book; the ebook and/or paperback are available below:

Does sharing have to be selfless or painful?

One of the things that I have had to let go of is the idea that if we help someone, it has to be 100% altruistic - in order for the action to be good. I don’t know if this is an idea that I adopted in childhood seeing others hold up selflessness as good - “give till it hurts” etc. The world would be a much better place if we knew that it is always in our benefit to help others. We always get something in return, directly or indirectly 💛 🫶🏻 Research shows that kindness makes for a much healthier society. I read a book last year called Shadow, Self & Spirit on transpersonal (or collective) psychology. There was a chapter on the psychology of evil and violence. People are less likely to harm others if they experience some form of compassion in their lives, or if they believe that someone cares about them - even if it’s a public figure, a politician, a celeb, or a deity like Quan Yin. Or better yet, family members, friends, and strangers. Random acts...

Is Manifesting for Real?

A while ago I wrote a post asking if spirit guides are real - pointing out that we have to challenge our beliefs, and also how we interpret what happens to us. Let's not get stuck in an idea or a worldview.  So today I'm going to take this approach to manifesting - is it for real? I don't think manifesting is for real, nor should it be the main focus in our lives. And honestly, I say this despite evidence to the contrary in my own life, i.e. things that I've manifested.   My issue with manifesting is that it's focused on ourselves, and what we can get in the material world. Personally, I've had good results applying conventional methods to get ahead - with help from my angels and guides. But still, it took drive and ambition to find a good corporate job in London, years ago. That and focusing on my personal competencies, and on the soft skills that were needed. Putting myself out there, networking, knocking on doors. Real world activities. And luck, that is a...

Looking into a Reiki Meta-Analysis (Clinical Study)

A few days ago, I came across a Reiki meta-analysis that was published last year. A meta analysis is a very large study that compiles other studies, in this case randomized controlled trials, and aggregates all of their data. As I have mentioned before, one of the challenging things about holistic studies, and clinical studies in general, is making sure that they accurately measure what they intend to measure. Note: I may come back to this in the future to keep refining information and thoughts, and to simplify it.  In the meantime, my first impressions :  Effects of Reiki therapy on quality of life: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.   Syst Rev. 2025 Mar 27;14(1):72.    The participants in these studies were cancer patients, surgical patients and people with chronic issues (including high stress) who were not hospitalized. There weren't enough people in those study groups to generate reliable statistics for cancer vs surgery, but when all of them...
