Intuition vs Imagination: How to Know the Difference

I'm behind with the transcript from last week's radio show. Life got in the way but back on track! The topic was how to tell the difference between intuition and imagination. There will be moments when we wonder if the message we receive is wishful thinking or fear. While I am still figuring this out for myself, these tools have helped me find my confidence. Without further ado ...

1) Say What Comes to You

If you are giving a reading to someone else, whether it is an oracle reading where we look at cards - or a clairvoyant reading where images come to mind - just put the message out there. The best we can do is to trust what is coming to us, no matter how goofy or illogical, and just say it. This opens up the channel through which we receive information so that more of it will come through. There is a certain degree of risk to the ego in readings. Our ego doesn't want to be wrong, to lose face. Just go ahead and say it, you can also take the pressure off by telling the recipient that you're unsure about it. Its the best way to learn.

A couple years ago I was sitting in class at The College of Psychic Studies. One of my classmates was connecting with my spirit guides to give me a message. She saw a wizard, but pushed the image away when she thought it had to be her imagination. I had been seeing the same wizard, and I had also pushed him away because I thought it was MY imagination. Luckily she mentioned it as a laugh, and wouldn’t you know, the message was to trust the wizardly image and listen. He was there to teach me about manifesting, co-creating and healing. So if something ludicrous comes to mind, say it anyway.

2) Ground and Clear Yourself

Of course when we are reading for ourselves, it can be harder to make that distinction, which brings me to the second part of the answer. Intuitive thoughts that scare us are usually our ego/imagination. In my experience, if our angels want to alert us they do it in a matter of fact way, without fear. The more grounded, clear and protected our energy is, the less we access that side of our subconscious.

Or you maybe you got an message that sounds an awful lot like wishful thinking. Play the Lottery! Go to the Casino! Wouldn't that be nice? If it sounds too good to be true, slow down and do a sense check. Ground yourself, be realistic and sleep on it.

3) When in doubt, ask for confirmation!

We can ask our angels, our guides and our intuition to confirm the message with a sign. Tell the universe to show you three butterflies, or three green cars in the next hour if the message you received is real. Make sure the sign is relatively rare but not possible. If you are going to be in a room with no windows for three hours, a butterfly might be hard to come by (unless it randomly pops up on your computer, in an email or on a screensaver, etc). Set a time limit, a day if you can wait. An hour if you can't. And relax!

You can also ask your body for confirmation. A friend introduced me to the idea of the human body as a pendulum that gives yes or no answers. Stand up and lean back just a bit, so your weight is on your heels and you’re teetering off balance (somewhere safe, please!) Start by saying a phrase that is 100% true: My name is REGINA, for example.  When you tell the truth, your body should tilt forward ever so slightly. Then go with an obvious lie: I was born in outer space. Your body will tilt backward quickly, careful not to fall down!

When you get the hang of this, you can use it to test your intuition on the go. Otherwise you can also use angel cards, tarot or another oracle to ask for confirmation. With tarot card you could set the intention that odd numbers are yes, even numbers are NO and all the rest are "we don't know/or can't answer" If for example, you pull the Five of Swords it means YES, while cautioning you to think it through. The suit of swords is about mental acuity, planning and the use of reason. The details may need ironing out and revision before moving forward.

Bonus Tip on Clairvoyant Images ....

One of the first classes I attended was with a wonderful teacher named Sue Allen - we were introduced to archangels and teacher guides that day in a workshop that consisted of clairvoyant meditations. Sue told us that when we ask to see the angel or the guide, and an image came to mind, just try to change it. If it is real you won't be able to manipulate the image - it keeps switching back!

For example if we see a pair of big dusty angel wings and try to make them look light and fluffy (the way we think angels are), the wings will go back to heavy and dusty. When an image is real, it reverts to the original image. If it comes from our imagination we are easily able to change it. That particular tip has come in very handy. And always, we ground, clear and shield our space before meditating to be sure we only connect with angels and guides that are there to help us heal and evolve.

2020 Update!

Here is a guided meditation to connect with Archangel Gabriel, the angel of water, emotions and intuitive messages. Trust what comes to you and apply the tips above ðŸ’—
