An Experience of PMS and Reiki

One of the things I love about the holidays is having plenty of time to read. This Christmas I finally read A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle. It was like going back to the basics with my personal development. The past two years I have kept myself busy learning energy healing and connecting with guides and angels.

Don't get me wrong, I love it, but my self-care fell by the wayside. Until recently I hadn't even made self-healing a daily habit. I've been giving myself daily Reiki sessions for two months now and I am really feeling the benefits. For one, a lot of my hormonal problems have cleared, including PMS. To be transparent, I had a medical issue in my 20's and my doctors advise against most treatments for PMS. Energy Healing & Reiki are complementary to medical care, not alternative.

Moving onto A New Earth ...

One of the things Tolle mentions in his book is a buried imprint of emotional pain. Our psyche keeps it hidden out of sight until a trigger brings it up again. He calls it the pain-body.  The more you identify with it and wallow in it, the harder it is to shake. For some it is to shake it. For some the pain-body manifests as depression, anxiety, chronic pain. A classic example is premenstrual syndrome; to some extent women get cramps because they expect to. I was finally able to kick PMS when I realised I don't need it, want it or have to live with it. I also stopped resisting and dreading the cramps to being with. Accepting the process with all of its aches and pains made it easier because a lot of energy is wasted on complaining and moaning. It may sound weird, but welcoming it actually made the pain and discomfort lower.

When I've given healing sessions to female clients who get bad cramps; I usually notice the following on the energetic level:

- At best apathy + a feeling of "shit it's that time of the month again, why God why?" And at worst a real dread and rejection of the female cycle and more importantly womanhood.

- As a result, the feminine aspects is unappreciated and this somehow dials up the experience of PMS. This is often notable in a healing session. Tuning in can give clues about imbalances in the body and what we can do on an emotional and mental level to help.

- Resistance to the whole process.

During these healing sessions I will usually send energy to the sacral chakra. I also send healing to the uterus and I thank the whole reproductive system for doing a good job, for staying healthy and I send feelings of appreciation and joy it's way. Sometimes I feel the presence of female healing guides, especially Isis. I have felt Isis’s presence with clients who have health issues that are predominantly feminine in nature: breast cancer and PMS. She is there to support and bring out the feminine side in all of us.

So back to Tolle. I was quick to spot the voice of my ego (mental chatter) but I couldn't spot my pain-body. That must mean I am so completely identified with it that it's hard to separate it (can't see the Forrest for the trees!). Then wham! I get Moctezuma's Revenge while on holiday in Mexico, followed by my period.

Talk about a bad 48 hours. I felt really sick and drained for two days and kept dragging myself down in this "cramps-tummy-ache" pity party. The first day I stayed home after getting sick five times in the space of one night. On day two I ventured out and did my best to separate myself from this wave of tiredness that kept taking over me. I found that if I indulged in feeling exhausted or feeling like crap, it just piled up. If I separated my thoughts and pulled my consciousness away, telling myself "I am not exhausted, there is just a feeling of exhaustion in me" it wasn't so hard to carry on. I had a brief glimpse of that pain-body (let's call it an 'I feel Sick pity party'), and I was able to separate myself from it.

I also noticed that PMS cramps have become much less of a hassle. I believe that my daily Reiki sessions, combined with a shift in consciousness, have helped me get to that point. I have to confess that I have a habit of preemptive pill popping at that time of the month, and I had gotten used to taking one before I got the cramps. I am even grateful I got Moctezuma's revenge the day before I started getting cramps; it was the only reason I didn't take anything for PMS - couldn't risk an upset stomach again.

One more thing...  I'm not sure a monthly visit to a Reiki Practitioner would have done the job. The fact that I gave myself daily self-Reiki helped. If this is a problem for you, I would suggest looking up a Reiki Master and asking for a Reiki attunement yourself. Then you can give yourself Reiki anytime  =)

Also, I am fully prepared to take painkillers when needed. Reiki is complementary to medical care, and personally, I would rather get the best of both worlds.

Reading List

These are some of my favorite books on Healing, Intuition and Personal Development. Love to hear your thoughts on them, each of these has been helpful to me ðŸ’žðŸ’žðŸ’ž Reiki hugs, Regina

Energy & Self-Healing Books:
  • The Essence of Self Healing, by Petrene Soames. This one talks about the psychology of disease, how our thoughts and beliefs make us susceptible to illness, a little bit of visualization to clear energy and also hands on healing. My copy is full of notes and highlights. Its great for anyone, but especially if healing is new for you. No need to be clairvoyant or to channel healing energy. A great self-healing book.
  • The Power of Healing Prayer, by Richard McAlear. The book focuses on Jesus Christ's healings and how we can replicate them by calling on his Spirit of Unconditional Love. What I like about it is the focus on Love, Compassion and Absolute Certainty as the drivers for healing. With more than three decades of experience as a minister of healing, the author also covers many psychological, emotional and spiritual considerations. This is a lovely book, though it does have a religious spin. Though I have to say that as a non-practicing Catholic, this book makes me want to be Christian more than anything I've heard the past 33 years. =)
  • Anatomy of the Spirit, by Caroline Myss. This is a fantastic book. I have heard it referred to as a bible by more healers than I can count. Among other things, it covers the seven chakras and how they each relate to life experiences, diseases and symptoms and relationships. Caroline Myss also explores the connections between the Catholic Sacraments, the Chakras and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Her description paints a picture of life stages and spiritual milestones that we go through from childhood to adulthood. This is a great self-healing book.
  • You Can Heal Your Life, Louise Hay. What can I say about this book that hasn't been said? Louise Hay explores the mental and emotional patterns (beliefs) behind illnesses, self-destructive patterns and bad luck in life. She also tells us how we can use affirmations and new beliefs to heal our life. The Law of Attractions meets Healing. Love it!
  • Hands of Light, by Barbara Brennan - This is a classic for professional energy healers. Her later books are also fantastic, especially Light Emerging (and possibly easier to read).

Spirituality & Personal Growth:
  • Sacred Contracts, by Caroline Myss. What I love about this book is that it gives you the tools to look at your life and challenges symbolically. Her idea is that we each have 12 archetypes in our personality and they surface in certain situations. For example, everyone has shades of The Victim in their personality though some people are more likely to play the Victim when it comes to finances, or love, etc. Cool stuff.
  • The Power of Now / A New Earth by Eckart Tolle. Two fantastic books which are great for just about anyone in the west. Essentially Tolle tells you to watch your thoughts, separate from them and find peace in the spaces between. We are not your thoughts, the movie in our mind is a worrisome distraction that takes us away from this wonderful gift of Life. To be transparent, I read the first few chapters of The Power of Now and skipped the exercises, but it still had a profound effect. My New Year's Resolutions for 2013 are based on A New Earth. Both are great, but I loved loved loved A New Earth.

Intuition & Psychic Development:
  • Ask Your Guides, by Sonia Choquette: Love this book! It got me started. The book teaches you how to tune into your spiritual support network (angels, spirit guides, etc) and how we can ask them for help and guidance. The book starts with angels before moving on to other friendly helpers such as healing and teaching guides and how to strengthen the connection with your Higher Self.  It also covers basic protection so you can open up safely.
  • Psychic Development Simplified, by Nathaniel - This book has everything you need to start opening up and developing your psychic skills. It covers energy management, various visualisation techniques. It is based on the author's experience with psychic development. Nathaniel has been blogging about the topic for years and this book consolidates his experience. To find out more have a look at this book review
  • Angel Therapy Oracle Cards, by Doreen Virtue.  These focus on small things that we can do to heal our daily lives 💕💕💕
  • Guided Meditation for Grounding, Centering and Claiming your Space, by Elliot Jay Tanzer. This meditation goes through the chakras, the aura and how you ground it and claim your gifts and intuition. I listed daily for a few months and still love it.

2022 Update: I've since published my own books on energy healing, intuition and magick. Check them out in the Bookstore.

Visualize Success and Create It

This weekend I was walking in the park and suddenly felt moved to  call a friend. I punched the password into my Blackberry and was surprised to have the screen open on the clock, which read 11:11 in huge white letters. It startled me. I was also curious because those numbers come up a lot for me.  What could it possibly mean?

Luckily I have found an even better place than Google for finding answers: my social media. A quick Facebook query led to a stream of answers about the Law of Attraction. Crazy, because the past two weeks I have been getting lots of messages about Visualizing Success and Manifesting Power from the Angel Therapy Oracle Cards. The 11:11 reinforced the message and told me to get on it asap.

I would also like to send a big thank you everyone who shared their knowledge of angel numbers yesterday!

Here is a summary of what 11:11 stands for:
  • Watch your thoughts! They have manifesting oomph this year.
  • Spiritual gateways are opening up and that makes manifesting even more powerful when a 11:11 appears in your life.
  • Take 2 minutes each day to think about what you want to create and attract in your life. 11:11 am and 11:11 pm ...

When I got home I listened to a few Esther and Jerry Hicks videos. What I need to do now is remember my vision board and feel good about it. Fill my mind with positive thoughts that reinforce that feeling of success. This insight is relevant for all of us right now; this morning I pulled separate Angel Therapy Cards for Twitter and Facebook. The messages I got were once again, Visualise Succes and Manifestation Power. The angels want us to know that from 2013 onwards our thoughts will be even more powerful. Keep your eyes on the destination, enjoy the journey and feel good about what you are going to create in your life.

A Little Telepathy

Something hilarious happened a couple months ago and I forgot to mention it. My mom was visiting me in London and we met a friend for lunch. We had agreed to meet at 12 o'clock sharp because my friend was on a short break. The underground was running late and Mom was stuck underground at 10 past 12.

My friend was also late and neither one of them could send a text because they were on the Tube. I was standing outside the  station waiting for  them to turn up, when I swear I heard my mother's voice shout "I am coming!" in a hurried voice. It was definitely her voice but when I turned to look, nobody was there. Or rather, only strangers were exiting the station.

It was definitely her voice.

For a second I thought I was crazy but then I just laughed. When she finally arrived she was really flustered. She apologised for being late and mentioned that she had been sending thoughts my way, telling me not to leave without her. She was really worried that she wouldn't find the restaurant.

It was a funny experience and I learned two things:

  • Telepathy does exist!!! And it is easier than sending an owl  =)
  • I need to be more relaxed. Seriously. My mom shouldn't stress about getting to lunch on time. It's a holiday after all!

#TweetingAngels

Writers are told to express ideas concisely. If you can say it fewer words, better! Not sure if this applies to Angel Readings though I have found myself editing mine lately. Snip, snip, cut and hopefully the message is clear. If you say too much people can get lost. But if you don't say enough they miss the point altogether!

I found myself a new challenge: Tweeting Angel Readings under 140 characters! Can it be done? We are about to find out! As of today I will be Tweeting Readings under the hashtag #TweetingAngels

This is how it works:

  1. Follow me on Twitter: @reginahcouza
  2. Send me a question with the tag #TweetingAngels.
  3. I'll read for the people I'm drawn to that day.
  4. Readings are for entertainment purposes only

Here is a short list of the #TweetingAngels:

  • AA-M stands for Archangel Michael, the patron saint of armies, soldiers, police and anyone who needs courage or protection. AA-M appears when you need that extra oomph.
  • AA-G  stands for Archange Gabriel who is known for stimulating communication, creative expression and fertility.
  • AA-R stands for Archangel Raphael, the healing angel. He helps us let go of emotional and physical pain. Raphael can also help us heal fears so that we can move on unhindered.
  • AA-U stands for Archangel Uriel. This is one of my favorites, he helps us find our life purpose and direction. Uriel works behind the scenes. He introduces us to the right people.
  • AA-H stands for Archangel Haniel.  She has lovely female energy and can help us get in touch with our intuitive side.
  • AA-R stands for Archangel Raziel, the angel of secrets revealed =)

The Story of Bottled Water

Today I was walking through Hyde Park and I remarked on how beautiful nature looks when there is no litter. The first few minutes it was totally clear and then I started spotting empty crisp packs and water bottles on the floor. Such a shame when people litter though if you stop to think about where trash goes after its binned, we're just littering that we won't see. The thought of landfills full of old computers, plastic bottles and other trash isn't a pleasant one.

It also dawned on me that I personally consume a huge amount of plastic bottles. When I'm out and about I'm quick to buy myself a bottle of Evian, Coke or Pepsi or fruit juices. Even though I try my best to stick that in a recycle bin it would be better if I didn't buy so many plastic bottles in the first place. As of today I have resolved not to buy a drinks that come in plastic bottles anymore. I will still have fizzy drinks at the cinema when they're out of the tap. And if I'm thirsty I'll refill my favorite Bobble Bottle. It's even worth investing in a small new Bobble that I won't mind toting around.

This is me doing my bit with the environment!

Reiki Milkshakes vs Energy Healing Smoothies

A couple weeks ago one of my friends asked if I thought it was sad that it is so much easier to promote myself as a Reiki Practitioner when my Energy Healing qualifications are "better". This is a question that I get a lot from the energy healing world. I can't ignore the fact that a lot of time, energy, and effort has gone into my Energy Healing qualification (and I'm still a student!). Fingers crossed I will pass my practical exam in May, after more than two years of classes, homework and dozens of case studies. The past two years have given me a solid base in energy management, clairvoyance, channeling and intuition. By comparison, a Reiki qualification can be relatively easy to get. Though it depends on the teacher; one weekend workshop is usually enough to get you started with Reiki.

Learning to channel Reiki is quicker because the teacher attunes you to the energy and then you just have to practice. Thinking about it and placing your hands on or near the area you want to heal is enough. Hands on, Reiki On. One workshop is all you need to become attuned to Reiki. This is enough for self-healings and also to give hands on healing to family and friends. It takes time for the flow of Reiki to build and with time you'll be able to channel more of it. The next weekend workshop attunes you to the Reiki Symbols for Power, Distant Healing and Mental and Emotional Healing. Strictly speaking, this is all you need to see clients professionally. How much time it takes depends on how much time and energy the individual dedicates to learning Reiki: studying the philosophy, channeling Reiki and learning to manage their energy successfully.

Initially, I signed up for Reiki I because I was curious. People asked me what the difference was between the two and I didn't know what to say.  I didn't want to sign up for another full blown healing course. Reiki is easy to learn so I though what the heck, let's sign up for a weekend workshop. I didn't expect to like it so much. If you ask me now, I'd say Reiki has a different flavour to it. It's like drinking a strawberry milkshake when you have had vanilla or pineapple smoothies all your life. I still love my smoothies but it is nice to alternate between the two.

The Reiki Philosophy is also something I have thoroughly enjoyed. The Five Reiki Principles are similar to Buddhism in that they teach you to be grounded, proactive and non-reactive. Yes, Reiki is easy to learn and it can be less work for students. I think that's a big plus. More people could learn to channel Reiki for themselves.

I also like the idea of being a Reiki Practitioner because it rhymes with my name. Reiki with Regina has a nice ring to it. What can I say! Before healing I was in marketing and promotions. It makes good business sense to start with Reiki. Even so, everything I have learned in healing school with make me a better healer overall. If a client wants a specialised energy healing session I can also offer that. We'll see how it goes. The next six months I am going to focus on Reiki.

Dealing with Unresolved Anger

Last year I was angry and hurt when something didn't go my way. I thought it was unfair and I didn't deal with it properly. A few months ago a tiny mole appeared on my back, near the heart. When I asked my intuition what it meant, the answer was "You're still angry. You feel you've been stabbed in the back." This made complete sense to me. One of the things I'm writing about in my book on Energy Healing & Cancer is how our emotions can leave a mark on the body, especially when we are not able to manage the emotional aftermath of a situation. I believe emotional and mental patterns can be linked to just about any any physical imbalance.

Louise Hay also discusses this theory in You Can Heal Your Life. Her view is that for every disease or symptom, there is a mental or emotional pattern that caused it. She links every disease to either anger or fear as the root cause. The classic example is stress leading to tension headaches, backaches and even ulcers. Stress is the way we experience fear of failure, for example failure to meet an important deadline or failure to pay our bills and rent. I believe a person's inability to release that fear from their  consciousness is what lead's to them feeling stressed. When the stress accumulates we start to see the negative effect on the body, be it a headache or hair loss.

The full range of human emotions can be held in the body, not just tension and stress. In my case I was angry and that little mole was an expression of the anger. It is also a visible sign telling me that I haven't dealt with the situation emotionally. Of course, I also made a trip to the doctor to have it looked at*. For whatever reason I was born with scores of moles. I have them checked out periodically as there are too many for me to keep track of. In old times people thought witches could be identified by their moles. I think they were onto something with me! I might have a mole for each past-life as a clairvoyant, healer or witch as I'm sure I had a few.

So back to my self-healing. There were two people involved in the situation last year. One moved away and I haven't seen her since. Though we were close I haven't felt like staying in touch or telling her about my new plans. The other person I forgave pretty quickly because I never really blamed them. I think I still need to deal with my emotions about what happened and release them. The past few days I've been sending Reiki to the memory.  With her I tried the other F word -> FORGETTING. Wrong approach. The only way to heal traces of anger is to FORGIVE.

In this case it was easy to forget because I didn't see her again. I don't know if my anger was even justified. Emotions are often irrational anyway. Anger is not a nice emotion to hold onto, even if you forget about it and bury it to get on with your life. Forgiving is about giving yourself a Get Out of Jail Free card. It doesn't affect the other person or condone their actions. Being mad at life is even more pointless than being mad at at person. If we're angry the best thing you can do is work through the feelings and let go. Otherwise the only person who gets hurt is the one in the mirror.

Energy Healing is complementary to medical care, not alternative. But it can help us understand what makes us tick under the surface. Try both approaches.
